After taking a much needed hiatus from the pizza scene the Nashville Pizza Guide is back on the prowl. I've been on a quest to find the best pizza in Nashville, so once a week I go into a place that serves pizza and simply order a cheese pizza. The way I think is that if they can make a BOMB cheese pizza then they have a good pizza. "Next time, hold the sand. Please."
While I understand that I didn't order a plain cheese pizza like I always do I will take that into account. My coworker and I got done cycling through downtown Nashville for several hours and worked ourselves up an appitite. We both love pizza and Two Boots was near by so stopped in. Let me just say that it's a good thing we were on bicycles because there was more parking for us to lock up our bikes than there will be to park your car. The street parking was hurendous and with the construction across the street- "good luck" is all I have to say.
Walking in you're met with a friendly girl behind the counter and what appeared to be a tired pizza chef. "Bless his heart". The lights are kinda dim, there's tons of old band posters on the walls, and the walls are painted like the mystery machine from Scooby Doo. It's a vibe really.
My coworker and I ordered some slices and sat outside. I got a Nashville hot chicken slice, a margarita slice, a cheese, and a pepperoni slice. And you can't forget a bottle of Virgil's cream soda pop.
The Nashville hot slice lacked a wow factor. Nashville hot chicken has got to give you an uppercut to chin otherwise can you even call it anything?
The margarita slice, the one with fresh mozzarella and topped with basil was honestly kinda dry and the amount of cornmeal on it gave a gritty texture like chewing on some 80 grit sand paper. The basil which is typically a fresh garnish on a pizza was cooked on. I didn't really care for that, but you decide.
The next slice was the pepperoni slice. Man was this one good. It was fresh. You could taste the sauce which was tasty. The grease from the pepperoni was settling on top. I can picture myself drunk AF after midnight eating this slice. Beware of the sand though! After I got done eating this slice I looked down and I was covered in cornmeal, the table was covered in cornmeal, and so was my paper plate. I COULD HAVE BUILT A FREAKING SAND CASTLE! Please to appease the pizza God's just broom out your ovens between firing pizzas or slices because burnt cornmeal was stuck in my cheese too. Unacceptable.
The last slice was the cheese slice and what can I say? "It was everything I could've wanted and needed minus the cornmeal." Fresh, thin, chewy, the right amount of crunch, the right amount of flop, not too greasy. Man was it killer.
All in all you guys did pretty good on the simple slices and subpar on the specialty ones. Maybe it was just an off day. Until next...
Read moreI will talk about the service and atmosphere prior to digging into the food. I would consider myself and my wife a pizza snob
Rating 5/5x3*
Service: We ordered hot garlic knots, two white pizzas (the kitty and nighttrap?) a drink and two craft beers.
Extremely laid back personal, and very accommodating. The staff went beyond what they said to compensate for what was lacking. Initially the food and service would have a lower scoring leading to a 4/5 but read the rest of the review for why this joint supercedes as a good pizza place and shines as a great establishment.
This place is what mellow mushroom should of been prior to franchising. The art, the vibe, the jams, the vcr everything was on point. The sound system mixed with the ambient lighting on the porch extended the greatness of the food into a memory I will not forget. We went after sunset and stayed for a short time after having a long day.
Service: They were out of hot knots (spicy garlic knots) so they subbed it out and comp'd us with two hot fresh pep za's and one speciality that I raved about. This negates the negative experience and cons from the food that I will list below. A part from 6.50 for each craft beer the price was justified with the amount we had with two 14in pizzas. I did not enter or see the entrance to the restroom so will not include it in the review.
Food: Their red sauce is delicious. I cannot say anything else. No notes. It pairs so well with the garlic knots and pep pizza it is a good third of a pizza and complimented the soft dough made just right. The crust is above average with slight crisp to it and nice thickness and crunch. What evens out the rating on the crust is the dough having those air pockets that are a mixture in texture between the crust on the edge and the dough underneath. The toppings are generous and we're quite tasty. One of our specialty pizzas was phenomena 10/10 and the other was 7/10 due to toppings (imo negligible bc everything else from the first one is the same and we chose these toppings).
All in all, I will miss this place, and will think about it and come back one day to enjoy the pizza again. I wish the staff well and appreciate them working with me on their own behalf. Lower the price on the craft beer dang it. Okay, have a great night. Until next...
Read moreWhile staying at the Virgin Hotel during Presidents Day, my wife and I walked down the hill and stumbled across this little, vibey, hole in the wall, pizza joint, which we now know as Two Boots Pizza. What started as a quick slice to curb our pre supper hunger, turned out to be a most memorable experience for us both.
The parlour offered several individual artisan slices, readily available, to choose from all of which looked absolutely delicious. Our server “Dualling” Dalton was not only super helpful, accommodating and knowledgeable, but he also was a fantastic ambassador for the company as he was obviously very proud of what he was serving to his patrons.
Julia was manning the oven and spun pizzas like a seasoned pro; her artistry was amazing to watch. She certainly worked her tail off making the most gorgeous looking pies.
At the end, a quick visit for what was going to be a slice to go, turned out to seeing us order “The Meg” pizza which paired nicely with an individual pepperoni pie which was graciously appreciated!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
Please, if you want a great pizza, an amazing vibe, be it while watching VCR movies on an old tube tv, listening to classic rock over the speakers,, or playing original Atari video games, this spot is undoubtedly for you. If I could give 6 stars, especially for service, I would. Thank you Guys, we’ll be back sooner...
