Brooklyn Dumpling Shop has been all of the rage on Instagram and for weeks I’ve been hearing about the cool automat set up here, not to mention I’ve heard so many good things about the dumplings themselves. With all the IG buzz I was excited to try ordering dumplings through the automat system myself. I was also really excited to try out dumplings that were not on the menu at Brooklyn Chop House. For those reading this and do not know, both Brooklyn Dumpling Shop and Brooklyn Chop House are sister restaurants. I dined at Brooklyn Chop House before the pandemic hit and I was in-love with the dumplings there so I had high expectations for the dumpling shop before I even arrived.
Here are 10 tips for those visiting Brooklyn Dumpling Shop for the first time:
1 - Come hungry 2 - Come willing to try dumplings you would never imagine trying 3 - It’s really easy to order dumplings using the automat. It’s really cool. It’s not complicated. Place your order on the ipad, you’ll get a barcode to scan, your order will pop up on a screen above with a number attached. Once your order is ready the compartment with your order opens up and BOOM it’s ready to pick up. Believe me, it’s super easy to use 4 - Each container of dumplings (are made to order) and come in 3’s 5 - *If you eat meat, you MUST try the: Pastrami, Reuben, and the Philly Cheese Dumplings. These are the show stoppers. The Must Try! The Most Unique Dumplings On the Scene! 6 - They have pre-packaged frozen cocktails if you’d like to get a buzz. They are a bit on the sweet side for those who do not like sweet drinks. I like my drinks any kinda way and I loved the Red Velvet Frozen Rosé (Frosé). 7 - For those who stick to more chicken based, go for the Kung Pao dumplings and teriyaki dumplings 8 - This place has BREAKFAST DUMPLINGS. Yes you are reading this correctly. Flaky croissant bacon egg and cheese dumplings. 9 - Don’t forget to order the dessert dumplings. Out of the dessert dumpling options I would go with the Nutella drops (that’s what it’s called) with some ice cream. I can’t stop thinking about these dessert dumplings. Crispy on the outside and Nutella filled on the inside. How could you get any better? 10 - Seating is plentiful! You can eat indoors and outdoors.
I suggest making it a fun date night with a loved one or friends. Dumplings are available 24/7 so you can enjoy dumplings at any...
Read moreI really wanted to like this place but the food here is a big FAIL! I guess with promo via TikTok and the like, lots of hype was created. However, it truly is all hype. As long as it took for my food to be prepared I expected it to taste decent at least. I ordered chicken parmesan dumplings, pb&j dumplings, two Chop Chop bowls (one grilled chicken and one crispy chicken) and waffles fries. I took my time sipping on my Lychee Frosé while browsing on my phone and by the time I finished the pouch my order still wasn't ready. YIKES!!! I give the owner(s) some credit for trying to be innovative but even their Automat self service system where customers can retrieve their food is quite confusing (as I've witnessed while waiting for my food). The atmosphere is quite dope and the music was good. So my food finally comes out and I'm excited. I go for the chicken parmesan dumplings first. So disappointed. The dough barely seemed cooked and the chicken parmesan mixture inside was very MEH. To make matters worse, they didn't even come with soy sauce. I would've been much more satisfied with a Hot Pocket. The pb&j dessert dumplings were just as bad. I thought the mixture inside would be a combination of peanut butter and jelly. Nope! They were stuffed with peanut butter, the shell was so hard, and the jelly and a white cream was poured over the dumplings. All of that thick peanut butter inside, by the time I finished eating one dumpling my throat was so dry. It was terrible! The Chop Chop bowls weren't that much better. They didn't have any lo mein so the only option available was white rice (and they sure gave a lot of it). They were pretty cheap with the meat and they gave a tiny amount of mixed veggies. They were just basic bowls and nothing to rave about. With all the rice they gave they could have at least drizzled some sauce over the bowls. Sadly, their waffle fries were the best out of all the food items I ordered. I would ONLY come back here for their Frozen Lychee Frosé ($10). They were so delicious and...
Read moreFirst of all, the dumplings are hit or miss. I’ve visited twice and both times I tried to try different things, but I’d always find one item I liked more than the other. Pepperoni pizza was really good the first time I had it but the second time it was really salty. I tried the teriyaki chicken and was kind of sad I had to pour the teriyaki sauce on it myself but the texture was delightful. I also had the chicken parm my second visit and it was really creamy but lacked flavor.
The kiosk system is intriguing but its lacks the ability to accept contactless payment methods. Maybe that’s the whole point but some people I know only carry cash or don’t carry cards/have them on their watch or phone. I feel that’s a little limiting but overall not bad.
They advertise that if you order online you wait less than if you order in store and I feel like that definitely varies. I once ordered online through grubhub because I used to work nearby and grubhub told me 15-45 minutes. So 15 minutes after ordering I head over and my food was still being prepared. I had a 30 minute break and I would estimate I waited 15-20 minutes for my food despite ordering online.
I will say however the owner can be a bit rude. He claimed that my original review was fake and made up to destroy his business despite me having receipts and bank statements to prove I’ve been there. I even read it to my mother who is a lawyer and my friends who found nothing wrong. He did make me feel threatened and unsafe so I deleted it. Despite all that I wish him the best and I still think the place can be wonderful. My intentions are only to leave an honest review and that is this.
All in all, I think the concept and food is pretty good but it can definitely be a hit or miss which is just...
