Overall rating: 4.0
I am torn, I absolutely wanted to love this place. I’ve been trying to go for at least 5 months. I was going to live out all of my Tulum fantasies 😅
I was going to rate it a bit lower (because the service was absolutely terrible), but the restaurant manager was a saving grace when we ran into him while leaving. He was very nice & showed us the newest installment (a “speakeasy”) set to open later this month.
Overall, this place just falls flat.
I had a reservation on a Tuesday around 9pm. I didn’t realize that the restaurant closes at 10, so maybe that’s why I had my experience. I’m not sure. Try going earlier.
2A) This is a weird complaint but the level of our waitress’ enthusiasm had to have been a -5. This is a $$$ place that took me months to get a reservation & you are not happy to be here. I was questioning many times if I was happy to be there.
She never asked us how we’re doing, she never tried to upsell us or anything. It was all weird for an expensive place.
Music. If someone who works there is reading this, please change your music. I was falling asleep. Now I will admit that I didn’t drink, neither did my table and with very poor service - waiting for our food, felt excruciatingly long. It was also 9:30pm so maybe we were sleepy. But man, I felt like I was at a meditation retreat waiting for food that never came vs the luxury of tulum, Mexico. Add a beat to your music at least.
Bathroom. I don’t usually judge a bathroom unless it’s realllly nice. But the toilet is so low, I was squatting. I would be concerned for older folx knees. Very odd.
All of this said, the food was very good!!! I had the chicken which was mouth watering. Reco the guac over guac/ sauces & pass on the seafood enchiladas if you choose to go. I also loved the decorations and the plants 😍😍 But unfortunately that isn’t enough for the price I’m paying.
Overall it was VERY clear that this is a new restaurant. And I’m not here to ** on you. Yes, I’m extremely disappointed. But I don’t hate you. These are very easy fixes. The food is great, but not worth a trip to...
Read moreI visited Tán for a birthday celebration a while back. The décor and atmosphere deliberately mimic what you might find in Mexico. I've been to Tulum and it'll definitely make you feel like you're at a beach club on the Mayan Riviera (Yucatan Peninsula). We sat outside on a hot day but the wind and fans were enough to make us feel comfortable.
For the food, I'd like to start in an unconventional place: The Kale Salad. I know, I know, no one will believe me, but it was REALLY good! I'm not a big salad or veggies guy, but I had it and it surprised everyone. Trust me. Try it. Our group was about eight (8) people deep so we ordered several appetizers, including the bone marrow, ceviche amarillo, esquites, oysters and guacamole. All were great tasting, however I recall wishing there was more of the tortilla/bread/crackers/carbs for consumption with some of the apps. Interestingly, it's the same thought I had during a visit to one of the beach clubs in Tulum.
I remember ordering the short rib for dinner (no point deductions there). My secondary option was the salmon. Maybe I'll try that on my next visit. Others tried the lamb and I can't recall the rest of the main dishes. We loved it all. We loved the drinks as well. There's one of them that was presented with smoke-under-glass (Shaman´s Tán Mezcalita). It's quite the instagram-worthy show, but if you're near one of the big outdoor fans, the show will be cut short lol.
The waitstaff was great. We stayed afterwards for the speakeasy on the ground level, for even more drinks. Again, they didn't disappoint. However, the flow of the area was hindered by furniture in the middle of the passageway between the front and rear of the floor. They have small tables there, but I can't imagine those tables being comfortable places to sit with people constantly passing back and forth.
Anyways, It's definitely worth a visit. It's got potential for greatness if the speakeasy portion's feng shui is adjusted. The outdoor fan position might need some tweaking. Other than that, you should have...
Read moreThis review will be broken down into two parts, first off for the lounge and then second for the actual dining room experience.
The lounge area is pretty amazing, it has a fantastic selection of different alcohols. Obviously focusing on Latin specific drinks like tequila, reposado, and mezcal. The bartender was super knowledgeable with not only the drinks but also the food and made a lot of suggestions that were really well received and were really delicious. The waiting stuff was fantastic and the restaurant staff that brought the food down were also fantastic and explaining everything and providing an excellent service and experience. The drinks pack a punch, and the three that were drinking, definitely felt it.
As we were waiting in the lounge to eventually get to the dining room area, we eventually closed out the tab at the bar and headed up. There we ate four entrees that were all delicious and looked fantastic and really made your mouth water for what you're about to experience. They were attentive of any dietary or allergy issues, even though our group had none. And when the food arrived it was amazing and they provided a feast atmosphere - even banning the pig that contained the tortillas Lorenzo. As I said the drink pack a punch, and our crew got a lot louder as the night went on. Even so, the staff was really accommodating and really polite and even after closing were still attentive and hospitable. The Octupus Maya was cooked incredibly well, I've never had better octopus. Everything was fresh, delicious, and just overall great.
With that said, the the restaurant staff, the experience, and the overall food quality was amazing. I would really highly recommend this place to anyone that enjoys coastal cuisine. And the decor and vibe in just make it an absolute awesome place to visit.
Apologies to the staff for keeping you all...
