We got the pizza and wings deal for $27, which is a pretty good deal. Wings had several options for wet and dry marinade, of which we chose cilantro lime and lemon pepper. The wings came piping hot and were delicious (though a bit salty). They came with ranch dressing which balanced out the salt. We got a half margherita, half spicy Hawaiian pizza. Both halves were delicious and about the right size, which may have been medium sized at a chain pizza place. The crust was thin beneath the pizza and thick at the handle, leaving a satisfying and delicious crunch at every bite. I almost wish I had more...
We got two flights of 4 beers ($12 each) we were allowed to choose out of their 9 on-tap beers, 1 can-only beer, and a partner cider. Their pale ales had just the right amount of bitterness and all of their other beers were just as characteristic and delicious. Since everyone has their own preferences, I can't say if one was better than others, but I personally recommend the Constitution Kölsch, the Texas Keeper no. 1 cider, and the BUBCO Amber altbier, though every beer was tasty.
The kölsch had a bit of citrus and honey notes, halfway between a light lager and a bitter IPA. It was truly the best of both worlds. The altbier had an unexpected coffee note and sweet maltiness to it, which I would expect someone who likes lighter stouts or porters might like. The cider, from Texas Keeper Cider, was dry (meaning not sweet) and appley. It was a fermented apple drink to its core, with just the right amount of acid and sweetness.
The interior was a hybrid kitchen, bar, restaurant, and brewery, so you got to see everything that went on. Service was very fast and friendly at answering questions, filling water, and taking orders.
We were told that they've only been open for two years and haven't expanded to bring their beers to anywhere but local places, so I definitely recommend checking them out if you're visiting San Antonio. 5/5 would go here again and...
Read moreIf there’s a holy grail of breweries in San Antonio, Back Unturned is it. Let me tell you, this isn’t just a place where they serve beer; it’s where beer dreams come true and where your heart finds a home. The vibe here isn’t just good—it’s Cheers on steroids. Forget Norm, Cliff, and Sam; this is the place where everybody knows your name and Andy and Sean make you feel like royalty.
Sean is basically a wizard of hospitality, and Andy? ....Let’s just say if they had a “Greatest Worldwide Employee" category in the 2028 Olympics, Andy would bring home the gold, silver, AND bronze. Together, they turn the brewery experience into something straight out of a sitcom crossover with a heartwarming drama. Every time you walk in, you feel like you’ve been adopted into the coolest, hoppiest family you never knew you needed.
Now, let’s talk about Baldemar. You might think Christy Allen was the heart and soul of Cheers, but Baldemar absolutely puts her to shame. He’s like the Gandalf of the brewery, only shows up precisely when he means too...guiding you through an adventure of nights so epic, even Frodo would quit his quest just to hang out here.
The beer? Pure magic. It’s so good that even people who “don’t like beer” leave converted like they just tasted a miracle. The food? Worth writing a love song about. And the ambiance? It doesn’t just feel like home—it feels like the home of your dreams, where the fridge is always stocked, the laughter never ends, and the memories flow as freely as the taps.
What can I say? Back Unturned isn’t just a brewery; it’s a phenomenon. A place so legendary that Glen and Les Charles should come out of retirement just to write a show about it. Andy, Sean, and Baldemar are the real MVPs, making San Antonio not just the Alamo City, but the Ale-amo City. Do yourself a favor: drop whatever you’re doing and go experience the magic. Your future self will thank...
Read moreAfter a long hot day at the San Antonio zoo, we stumbled into back unturned brewing company sweaty and with two kids in tow. They welcomed us with ice cold Waters for all and smiling faces.
It was happy hour so appetizers were only five bucks. We ordered the brussel sprouts with pineapple habanero sauce and they were so good! We got the beer twists (bow shaped bread bites with cheese dip) "for the kids," but ended up fighting them for them because they were so good.
I got the "Queen of Beers" and my husband got the "Dream Juice" we both enjoyed them so much that we got some to take home along with a couple others to try. They were also so accommodating for our kids, specifically my Diva of a toddler who wanted pink lemonade and refused to be regular lemonade that the bartender made for her until he added some grenadine. He said not to worry about it and that he gets how kids are... Yes, you do sir! I was so grateful for his patience with my rude girl Lol.
The kids got small pizzas to their liking, which was affordable and we shared the large campagnola. It was so delicious we ate the whole thing!
Everything was wonderful from start to finish and everyone was friendly and helpful. We got a four pack of beers to take home as a little treat!
You should definitely give this place a try whether you're a local or just visiting San Antonio! They are a small family business that I hope is around for a long time. We'll be back next...
