Johnathan is a natural teacher and I learned a lot from this class. I learned that my milk steaming method that I have been using is not as effective at making great foam as the one he taught me, and although I have had some trouble replicating it on my work machine, I HAVE learned the technique, so I am now able to take the fundamentals of this better technique and adapt to make better milk in general.
The people at my work are amazed at how much progress I have made since I took this class! I have gone from basically unable to make latte art to being able to execute a very nice heart about 75% of the time. And as I say, that's considering that our machine is very high-pressure and the steaming method is different.
Johnathan and I had a slight mixup about something and he was incredibly kind and professional about fixing it and addressing my concerns. He went above and beyond what I would've expected out of someone in that position and really impressed me with his professionalism - not everyone would've handled the confusion like he did and I was so grateful.
So, if you are a beginner, or have a little experience like I did, or I assume if you are looking to perfect your expert skills, I totally recommend this class! He was able to identify something very precise that many other teachers wouldn't have noticed that made a huge difference and it was all very impressive.
Johnathan is great. Highly recommend the class! Also, his coffee shop is for a good cause and it feels good to support a business that does good in the community. Not enough people choosing to do good in this world and Johnathan has devoted his career to helping others. That is...
Read moreBest coffee in town, and hands down the best mission I’ve ever seen.
I came in just to grab a cortado (I’m a bit of a coffee nerd), and not only was the coffee incredible: smooth, rich, perfectly done, but I walked out feeling genuinely hopeful about the world.
I ordered my usual iced cortado, and the barista kindly suggested a way to save money on it. When I asked where to leave a tip, he smiled and told me he’s actually the owner, and they don’t use a tipping system because all staff are paid a solid living wage, well above average.
Throughout my visit, he was warmly guiding his team, showing real respect and care. Then, while reaching for some stevia, I noticed their mission statement posted nearby: they run an apprenticeship program for people from marginalized communities, offering paid, hands-on training so they can build meaningful careers and re-enter the job market with skills and support.
I rarely leave reviews, but this is one of those places that deserves to be known and celebrated. Businesses like this aren’t just selling coffee, they’re creating change. I left with a great drink, and a full heart. Let’s support more places...
Read moreThis review is for the Espresso 101 course that my wife purchased for me for Valentine's Day. As I already had a modest background with making coffee, I knew some, but not all of coffee basics. Johnathan filled in the gaps of my knowledge, and then we got down to business. The purpose of this course for me was to learn how to make better coffee with my Gagglia Classic machine. I have some homework now on how to perfect the coffee grind to pull the perfect espresso. Secondly, Johnathan taught me how to use the steamer, so I can make the perfect cappucino for my wife. Attached is a couple pics of the cappucino I made for my wife arriving home. I think it is pretty good on my own, and this is thanks to all the practice and guidance/tips that Johnathan gave me. We also compared his commercial grade machine (much more powerful steam output) which was helpful.
If you want to learn how to make better coffee, whether it be on your home machine or not, Johnathan will definitely help you.
Also, Johnathan has a great program for helping the homeless, so check his website for...
