9 Beans has been one of our favorite Mexican eateries ever since we moved back to the area. Their tortillas are great, their tacos (when fresh) are crispy and awesome. Our favorite thing on the menu happens to be the Chile Relleno, which is probably the best we've ever had. The sauce is rich, the batter is crispy and always well done, and the cheese, which is what they use in their quesadillas (highly recommended) is flavorful and high quality. The cooks and the ingredients they use are surely the stars of this place. Which is good, because every time we venture to obtain these culinary wonders we must embark on an epic journey over the mountain of idiocy and incompetence that is their customer service people. Usually when we eat in, which isn't as often because of how pedestrian the restaurant is, everything is mostly ok. But we have learned that you simply do NOT leave with your pickup order without checking everything, because they screw up Every. Single. Time. Without fail. If you were to put money on it, the safe bet would be on a screw up. We order the aforementioned rellenos almost every order, usually in a number 15 so we get 2 to share. They've never gotten it right. Not once. I almost think their software has a bug and when they put in a 15 it freaks out and translates it to some other menu combo because we always end up with something different. It's almost hilarious how reliably they screw up. It's not the kitchen, because we see the receipt and they always put it in wrong. Want a side of sour cream for your burrito? About every 4th time they'll key it in wrong and it ends up inside. The rellenos take a long time to make, so we will order for pickup, and plan another 20 minutes after we get there so they can fix the eventual screw up. Maybe the hassle is a good thing. I mean, if it was easy to get your food from here we'd go broke and get even fatter. It's usually $25-30 to feed our family here, which isn't bad with 4 kids I guess. But we have to be really committed, really wanting a freaking relleno to mount the task, and it usually only happens once or twice a month. If they worked on this problem they could really increase...
Read moreI went through the drive-thru . I had never been before, and I asked the gal if she could give me a couple of minutes to look over the menu. She kept coming back and asking me and asking me if I was ready to order. So I just ordered the first thing i saw that was not a $15 + meal. If i want to spend that kind of money, there are 10 wonderful Mexican restaurants i can sit in and enjoy my meal and table service!! What I really wanted was something simple for dinner. I ordered a basic burrito for my husband it had beans rice and chicken in it because apparently everything else you add makes it cost more and more, and the burrito was already $9! There was nothing on the menu to indicate what was inside of the burrito when it was made and what things you could add to it and how much each item you were adding cost . So, with that done, I looked on the menu and found a $9 quesadilla for myself! I asked for it to be carne asada. I thought for $9, a quesadilla would be loaded with cheese and come with sides of sour cream and guacamole and would have lots of meat in it. Unfortunately, i discovered that when i unwrapped it, that was not the case. So, anticipating a good meal, i brought our items home to have for dinner. I did end up adding a scoop of guacamole for $4. Blech! The only thing the guacamole tasted of was lime, which made it horrible! I only ate a couple of bites of it with my quesadilla. BTW, I can make better guacamole. It's super easy... and it's supposed to taste like avocado. I know Lime keeps it from turning brown, but it also hides how old it is . So back to my quesadilla... It did not have cheese all the way to the edges... there was only a little puddle of cheese in the very center of the fold of the tortilla as though it were a taco, and the carne asada sat on the cheese. I was also very disappointed in the very bland meat. Now, it needed to be re-prepared so I could eat it so it would taste more than just tortilla. I had to remove all of the extra tortilla and tore my way down to something that resembled an enchilada! Come on, man! Needless to say, I probably...
Read moreI used to really enjoy this place, but my last few visits for lunch have been disappointing. I would call ahead, and they would say it would be ready in 10-15 minutes. We would arrive about 10 minutes later, pay, and then wait over half an hour while they prioritized serving people who had just arrived and ordered in person. After a long wait, they would finally ask us what number we were, only to pull our order from behind a wall on the counter, where it had been sitting for quite some time. From the waiting bench, we could see the path from the kitchen to the counter, and it was obvious our food had been there for a while.
I initially thought this was just a one-time occurrence, but it seems to have become the norm. When I mentioned this to the staff, the woman just shrugged and said, "Well, that sucks. Have a better day." There are only a few places nearby where we can grab lunch during our half-hour break, and this was one of them.
When we finally received our food, it was cold, and the tortillas were slimy and mushy. The food overall was bland and not very tasty. I would like to think that things might improve in the future, but after this last visit, I don't think we will return to give it another chance.
Hopefully if you decide to give this place a chance you're not forced to live out our previous...
