2025.1.21 (2 nights) I love anything that is properly gentrified and the owners of Baba House has done an absolute excellent job, using a traditional Peranakan house, combining with the rows of shophouses (left and right) and converting it into a viable chic hotel. Trust me, do not judge the book by it’s cover. The interior decor is way better than the exterior. LOCATION Excellent location. It’s right next to the touristy Jonker Street minus the noise and fanfare. ✔️Walking distance to good food and traditional culture. ✔️Walking distance to the Melaka river ✔️Walking distance to Christ Church. HOTEL BUILDING The external design is simple and tastefully furnished. The lobby exudes modern Peranakan warmth. Kudos to Jeremiah who professionally checked us into our Deluxe room. We decided to treat the front desk Putu Piring 🤣 The hotel also filmed outdoor movies every night … but we got bitten by mosquitoes… forcing us to retreat to our room to watch instead. BEDROOM - Bikek Hibiscus (Deluxe Plus) We were on the 3rd floor. The decor was timeless but very well-maintained. Everything feels modern cozy. Love the long wooden ledge ! ✔️Flooring: Wood laminate. Love it. I find this cleaner than carpets. ✔️View: None. It’s windowless. The architect’s hands are tied designing a heritage property but cleverly managed to create natural light into the room through skylights and a side glass panel by the door. ✔️Bed: Very very comfortable! ✔️Sheets: clean white Cotton sheets ✔️Pillows: Soft & fluffy. 2per pax (with extra, in cupboard). ✔️Television : Large Flat screen. Wide selection of international channels with Netflix ! ✔️Lighting: Adequate ✔️Phone: By the beside but not the bathroom. ✔️Plugs: international built in plugs but with usb plugs. Adequate ✔️Safe Deposit box: Yes ✔️Fridge: Unstocked mini fridge. ✔️Wardrobe: Yes. Adequate wooden hangers. ✔️Electric Jug: Yes. ✔️Beverage: Teabags and Coffee powder ✔️Housekeeping: Clean. ✔️Bathrobes: No. ✔️Slippers: Yes. Disposable. ✔️Stationery: small note pad & pencil ✔️Complimentary mineral water: Yes, 2 bottles ✔️Iron & Ironing Board: No ✔️Shoe Horn: yes ! ✔️Shoe Shining service: No ✔️Soundproofing: Excellent. We were in a quiet part, away from the main lift. BATHROOM ✔️Decor: Simple with wood trimmings, befitting of a 4-star hotel. Large Shower compartment. ✔️Phone: None ✔️Shower: Decent water pressure. Hot water is consistent. Option of rain shower available ✔️Bathtub: None. ✔️Clothes drying line: No. ✔️Hairdryer : 1800w ✔️Toiletries: Toothbrushes, shower cap, soap, body wash, body lotion, shampoo. (Note: no facial cotton), sewing kit. The ziplock bag for unused hand soap was very thoughtful! ✔️Towels : fluffy white ✔️Wash-basin & Taps : well-maintained. ✔️WC: Flushes well. I just wish it a proper bidet, like the Japanese type. WIFi Complimentary. Very stable and reliable. BREAKFAST The hotel has a wide spread of Peranakan buffet breakfast. We skipped because we really wanted to try to local coffee shops. I highly recommend CSDR@Jonker (opens 7:30am) and Jonker 88. SWIMMING POOL None. We checked out rooftop for the tanning pools but didn’t find any. GYM None HOTEL SPA None CONCLUSION My overseas friend (first time to Melaka) was impressed with the Peranakan tiles. So was I. I even spotted the Royal typewriter (which I learnt typing on) lovingly preserved. Of all the times I visited Melaka (unfortunately I find Malacca overly touristy now), this is my first time staying in the historic town. I will never stay anywhere else in my subsequent visits. This is not only the perfect spot but the perfect hotel. I hope it will be well maintained for my future stays. I’d love to hibernate in this hotel.

----- This is a beautifully renovated shophouse that sits on a rather quiet area at the center of this historical town. Ample of public space, filled with many beautiful collections is one of the things I like about it. There are plenty of places for beautiful pictures. The rooftop bar is also very nice, but the bar is open until 10PM. You can continue using it until 1AM, but you won't be able to get drinks there. I think the hotel is already acquired by some hotel management group in Singapore but they still hire a lot of locals, which is a good thing. Upon checking in, the staff will give you a drink voucher (token). You can redeem it on the rooftop bar (the staff didn't inform us, and I only found this out on the packet of the token) so you get to enjoy it on the rooftop. Reminder: rooftop bar is for juice only; for kopi or teh, you need to go to the lobby. The pros aside, there are a couple of things that I am rather disappointed with: 1. The central part of the building has a patio under construction, blocking a beautiful wall. With all the scaffolding there, it looks like a public hazard. I would want to be informed of all the ongoing interior renovation work beforehand. As a result of the construction, you have to detour to get to your room, but there were no clear sign for that. The house is like a huge maze so you just have to walk all the corridors just to find your room. And the route contains stairs that you must climb to get to your room, so if you have accessibility needs, this is something to keep in mind. 2. It does feel like the hotel itself is extremely short-staffed, and there are endless hours for the staff to make up some room somewhere. From around 8am you will hear the loud BANG of the doors closing, and from what I saw, it's actually from the cleaners sometimes. I understand they are doing their job, but a decent hotel should have enough manpower to finish all room-making within the 12pm to 3pm window. Not good for light sleepers. 3. They put Taiwan, Province of China on my receipt, which I personally feel offended. 4. We booked a room for 3 pax. Interestingly, there were only 2 chairs, 2 sets of cups/coffee/bottled water and toiletries in the room. As if the only thing that 3rd person need is the bed. It's no big deal and they will immediately cater to your request if you ask for one more, but I do feel this isn't something I have to REMIND a boutique hotel to take care of. 5. When we entered the room, it stinks. And the aircon is leaking water and dripping down (see video). Maybe it's because some of the rooms don't have outward facing window, so it smells like a toilet + toilet fragrance. One of the spoons was also dirty - looks as if someone was eating Kuih Salat with it and didn't bother to wash. Again, these are no big issues, but if they brand themselves to be such an ATAS hotel, probably this could be avoided. The room also appears to have some other faulty parts - loosen hangers, cracked furniture etc. At this price range, I do feel this shouldn't happen. 6. This hotel will put misleading pictures on booking site. My family doesn't like rooms without outward facing window, so we booked a room where the picture shows an outward facing window. But when we arrived at the hotel, the room has non outward facing window. To me, this might be legal, as per the T&C of the booking site, but this is definitely made clear their intention to cheat. As far as I know, the Puri hotel across the street and the Courtyard hotel down the street is equally nice in the interior, but cheaper.

Baba house went thru some big refurbishment & Reno. At this point of time the Reno is ongoing (painting of walls etc). The only great advantage of the hotel is that it has very good location no doubt, in a colonial building and rooms and the corridors etc were tastefully renovated and decorated. But the amenities, services, breakfast and overall management have roooooooms for improvement, given the HIGH prices for the rooms. 1) Rooms: The deluxe rooms were really small, some with no windows (or windows that can't open), hence dark and can be claustrophobic! We called before we booked the rooms. and were given wrong info of the beds setting for Family suite. It took an extra hour to check in to the right room. The design of the hotel & rooms are generally not friendly for elderly ppl or the differently abled people. At out family suite the door to the toilet were so heavy that my elders couldn't open the doors! Also there are small steps that are easily missed. 2) NO HOT WATER! The family suite we stayed at has hot water problem!! After a long day when 4 of us tried to shower at 9+pm, after trying for some half hour the hot water was not working. When finally spoke to the reception we were told we had to turn on both the hot water at the basin AND the shower to let the water pressure run (due to high volume usage of hot water from other guests). This is a horrible scenario given the expensive suite we are paying! and imagine how much water gone to waster to take a hot shower!!! Finally that night both my elderly aunties didn't have a shower! It was a disappointing and frustrating experience! After day 1 I complaint to the hotel manager, but no better solution given to the hot water (we just have to let the water run!). They did try to offer room change but it was too much hassle (just another night) and so we made do with the problem. 3) Customer service Overall customer service experience was not great - from front desk to breakfast restaurant. The staff were friendly and helpful, but there are insufficient staff strength as a whole. I noticed there's only ONE staff at front desk at anytime, and not sufficient to attend to guests. Perhaps this is a problem overall in Melaka service industry, but then again given the EXPENSIVE rate of this hotel, as a guest I think we deserve to have adequate expectation in receiving good services. 4) Housekeeping After housekeeping, I still find the same dirt on the floor - no sweeping or mopping when they clean the rooms. This is BAD! 5) OVERALL If it's just a 2 star or 3 star hotel we'd have lower expectations, but this hotel is so expensive and naturally we have expectations from room amenities, facilities, and services. It's definite below average! We checked in 5 rooms and it's an expensive lessons to learn - I would never stay here anymore.

The hotel has a very location and the hotel is beautiful. And everything stops there. We booked a balcony room for 3 days. Upon arrival, the room smelt so bad we couldn’t take it. We tried to open the balcony window and were greeted by the scent of sewage and garbage. The room was at level 3 and the balconies open up to the back alley. The bedsheet was dirty too. We decided we couldn’t stay on and requested to change room. Upon changing of room and downgrading, we found the 2nd room which was the deluxe plus, to be quite ok. No smell and altho smaller, we were just happy with the state of the room. There were stains on the sheets but housekeeping settled that for us quite quickly. Everything was well until night 3. It was raining very heavily and we started to realise that the walls were getting wet. The bathroom window was dripping rain into the shower and the walls were having patches all over. We did worry about the water reaching the switches that might not be very safe for us but since we are checking out the next day, we thought just let it be. Alas, at 4am… the room’s power went out. And it came back on and off, off and on repeatedly. Thank god we can still call to the receptionist. They came and we showed them the water reaching the power switch beside the door (on the wall). We said this might explain the power outage. So another reception came… and immediately asked my friend “do you want to check out now?” All these while the room was blinking on and off. Tv on and off. Of course we say NO?! At 4am go where?! Then my friend said No. We need to change room. And they took us to a room at L2. Now at 4.50am, we are in our new room with dirty sheets (stained). But we really are too tired to do anything else. This establishment looks nice on the outside but the smell is bad, the corridors are hot and smelly and the structure is very old. The rooms are smaller than they look. The good things abt this hotel are - 1. Good aircon 2. Great location And it stops there. Oh forget the bar at the pool level. No bar , nothing. No room service menu as well in the room. Having changed TWO ROOMS during our stay here is our first time encountering. Trust me. Don’t stay at level 3 and avoid the balcony rooms. The front desk staff are friendly but I think they are also quite lost when complains happen and all because after all, they only work here. The establishment of this hotel should fix some fans along the corridor for ventilation at least and begin to do some upkeeping renovation along the way. Although this hotel is relatively new, nothing feels new. UPDATE: The manager got back to me and was able to compensate me the inconveniences caused. Thank you Mr Sam.

Rooms: We loved the details and thoughtfulness put into the furnishings and facilities (toiletries, plenty of charging options) Service: We are a party of 6 persons, that booked 3 rooms. We arrived 1 hour earlier than the check-in time and was informed that the rooms will only be ready at 3pm. There was no more storage space left for our bags. At 3pm, when we went back to the lobby, it was packed with all the guests that were waiting to check in. Even though we already registered our details and signed the check-in form an hour earlier, we had to queue for another 15 mins. When it was our turn, the concierge told us that our rooms weren’t ready. We also found out that all 3 rooms were placed on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd floor. So we asked for the rooms to be next to each other on the same floor. After some checking (the concierge was gone for a very long time), he managed to find us 3 available rooms on the 1st floor. 1 room was almost ready but another 2 were not. He mentioned that the almost-ready room had a hole in the ceiling that needed to be plugged. When my friend asked if there anything wrong with the room, he replied that there was nothing wrong, just needed to fix the ceiling hole. So we took the room key for the 1st room and said we’ll come back later in the evening for the 2nd and 3rd room. At this point, we were already tired from all the queuing and waiting. When we entered the room, we could immediately smell dampness in the room, the toilet wall was leaking very badly. What was worse than that, we found a dead worm on the floor next to the bed… We went back to the concierge to ask for a change in room, which he did. I went back to ask my friends to vacate the room so that we could check into the new room. After that, when I returned the hotel key card, that was when the concierge apologised (for the first and only time). Overall: Greatly disappointed with the poor quality of service, despite the very nice-looking hotel. I’ll have second thoughts of going back if I’m going to have to go through that check-in nightmare again.

Pros -Great location walking distance to jonker and massage parlours and tons of restaurants and bars - Hotel newly renovated as of Sep 2022 visit. - Hotel is larger than what it appears to be. - Room and premises were clean and generously sized. Aesthetically pleasing. - Netflix and a good number of channels on the TV. - Nice smelling shower amenities provided. Especially loved the scent of the body lotion. Used it all up ! - Stable in-room WiFi. Cons - Practically windowless rooms - Sheets were extremely scratchy. Tolerated it for the first night by making do with throwing our own cotton t shirts on the pillows. We checked in close to 12am as we were stuck in traffic and very tired so exhaustion did us in. Asked for a set of fresh sheets that were not starched on the second day but it was still very scratchy and rough on my face. Ended up using our t shirts as pillow cases throughout the stay. - No provision for hanging a towel or clothes in the bathroom. - Towels were low quality. Non-absorbent and full of lint that stuck to our bodies. - Hot water showers weren't always consistent. There were times I had to take cool showers. - Hotel parking directions not clear at all. We were given very vague directions by receptionist. - There are too few parking lots for the number of rooms they have so we couldn't park within the hotel's parking premises, which was a concern for us as we chose this hotel because of its claim of on-site private parking availability. We were there on a weekend. - Two bottles of water a day compared to the standard of 4 bottles I'm used to. Not that it's a big issue. Just listing out everything I took note of. Didn't have breakfast there coz we walked through and saw that it was a very simple one. Opted to eat out locally, absolutely no regrets on that. Paid approximately 310RM per night. Think that might have been on the higher side for this hotel. It was lantern festival weekend. (Mid autumn festival)
