Accidentally Staying at a Centuries-Old Historic Hotel in Baltimore

This is definitely a premium, four Star, hotel and with a few minor changes and improvements it could be a five-star luxury hotel. When I arrived at the hotel they acknowledged my status with IHG and offered an upgrade which is always very nice. As you walk into the building, the marble flooring, pillars and chandelier really make for a grand entrance. The lobby is on the second floor which has a very nice sitting area with wrap around views of the city. There aren't any amenities like a spa or swimming pool, but our room definitely made up for that. The room offers a large amount of space with the bedroom about 10 to 20 feet away from the sitting area, both with their own TV. The ceilings are very high as well and the large windows offered great natural lighting and views of the city. Like I mentioned earlier the hotel doesn't offer a swimming pool, hotel tub or anything; however the absolutely MASSIVE soaking tub with jets is way better in my opinion. I really struggled with assessing this hotel, because this MAJOR problem.... cleanliness. I only mention this here in hopes that the constructive feedback will be used to make some improvement. The room was not very clean at all and it really hurts to say this since it is a Kimpton, which usually has higher standards. And I'm not the type to really nitpick about cleanliness, but even the pen was filthy which indicates a lack of attention to detail. There was hair in the tub and shower, a contact lens on the bathroom floor, some built up crust on the sitting room chairs, holes and stains in the carpet....and even more than that. With all that, you might wonder why rate it 4 stars? Well that's simply because this is a bonafide premium hotel, but needs some minor improvements with maintenance. Most premium and luxury hotels that I've seen even had a bathrobe, slippers and coffee station, but I noticed even these were absent from the room.

I have been coming to the Hotel Monaco in Downtown Baltimore for years, and I will say that it’s starting to show it’s age a little bit, but the one thing that has never depreciated is the level of service from the Kimpton Hotel staff. I always know if I choose to stay here that I’m going to be greeted warmly, and receive great amenities including the evening, wine hour, and complementary coffee in the morning. The rooms here have so much character because of the historic status of the building. The one thing you’re going to miss out on if you enjoy it is technology and so I have to give the rooms a four because there hasn’t been an update to the television system. I’m not a huge fan of the order movies on your TV. I would much rather be able to stream. I love that IHG utilizes liquid soap, shampoo, and conditioner methods which reduces waste, but also means that you never need to worry about having it when you travel because there’s plenty and it’s not little tiny bottles. There are restaurants nearby, but there is one conveniently located on the ground level. The valet parking is pretty expensive, but it is in the building so you know that your car is covered. Overall, I always will recommend this hotel and it’s in a convenient location where you can walk or scooter to the inner harbor, any of the stadiums or concert venues.

The hotel appeared very nice upon entry. Housed inside the former B&O Railroad headquarters the Kimpton Hotel Monaco has alot of history. Unfortunately, the hotel needs some TLC. It is not falling apart by any means, but a deep cleaning couldn't hurt. The room was spacious and the bed was comfortable. Temperature in the room was finicky as in the room was hot one minute and freezing the next. Maybe the temp control was messed up. One disappointing factor about the room was there was dog feces (or at least I hope it was from a dog) under my bed. I dropped my phone and when I bent down to pick it up I saw dried feces under the bed. I have no problem with pets or a hotel that allows pets. My issue is it is apparent the room hasn't been cleaned very well. I also tried out the gym, which had free weights, weight machines, treadmills, etc.. the equipment was a little dated, but still functional. Downside was that alot of the equipment was covered is a thick layer of dust and several pieces of equipment had large patches of rust on them. Overall the stay was good, but it is not a hotel I would be interested in visiting again.
