Beautiful Setting, Disappointing Service The location and atmosphere are absolutely amazing ,the patio is beautiful and the drinks are excellent. I’ve been here twice, and while my first visit for drinks was great, my experience with the food this time was quite disappointing. I ordered a dish with a patty that was completely raw inside dry on the outside and rare in the middle. I kindly asked the waitress to check with the kitchen, but she came back and told me it was “normal.” I felt dismissed, and eventually had to go to the kitchen myself to ask for help. Thankfully, another staff member, Ali, stepped in, offered to remake the dish or replace it with something else. I appreciated his communication and professionalism. However, 10 minutes later ,while I was quietly enjoying the new dish ,the original waitress returned abruptly to tell me I would need to pay for both dishes (with just 30% off the first one), even though I had only taken one bite from that “muffin” and had expressed my concern right away. It felt unnecessarily confrontational and unkind. In the end, Ali helped resolve the situation fairly, and I’m grateful for his effort. But overall, it left a bad impression. A lovely space, but unfortunately inconsistent service and a poor handling of the situation by some staff. Hopefully they will do better with staff training in the near future.

Amazing food, no question! I came in after seeing the pictures of the food online, plus it was a short walk from my airBnB. So many things looked good on the menu, so I asked the server what was most popular. She indicated the dish I was least excited about (from my top 5), but I ordered it anyway. And Holy heck, if the Monk Superfood Bowl is this good, everything here is a rock star. I loved the poached egg in it, and the focaccia bread was the star of the end as it helped me finish off the veggie hummus and feta. At first, I thought there wasn't enough hummus, but more was hiding, so it ended up vatic perfectly balanced. The pickled onions were a joy to eat for me because it gave the bowl much needed acid. This was truly a delight, and the flavor combo was something I'd expect from a Michelin star restaurant. The waitstaff was all very friendly and personable (and fluent in English), and I could see a rack of blankets positioned outside in case guests got chilly. I've never seen that before and I was impressed. I bet everything on their menu is delicious, and I might have to come back again to try more of it.

Bistro Monk wears understatement as a badge. Its pale frontage and climbing vines give little away, but step inside and the intent is clear: a conscious pushback against the “global café template.” Arched ceilings, muted tones, and playful wall sketches (monks praising a bowl of coffee, cooks haloed over plates) bring character rooted in the building’s monastic past. It’s a space that feels sheltered yet light, cosy but deliberate. Food follows suit: Eggs Benedict reimagined with avocado, shoots, and smoky-charred bacon — good eggs, runny as they should be, though the hollandaise could have been lighter. Buttermilk pancakes came drenched in blueberry sauce and cream, clean in flavour if a touch safe. Monk makes its point less with perfection on the plate, more with atmosphere and intent.

Update:

How real customer care works. After I posted my previous review, the management of the bistro personally reached out to me to better understand what happened. I truly appreciate this kind of response — it shows that they care about their customers and take feedback seriously.

I’m happy to say that improvements have been made. We visited again today, and the quality of the food was excellent — just like in the good old days!

This level of professionalism and attention is impressive and deserves recognition. We’re glad to have our favorite bistro back and look forward to coming again soon.

Previous review:

RIP Monk. This used to be our favorite spot for breakfast. My husband, our little son, and I would come here almost every weekend. I loved their roast beef on bread, and my little one adored the pancakes. But a couple of weeks ago, something went wrong — I ordered the avocado toast, and the bread was stale and tasted awful. I thought, okay, these things happen even in good restaurants. Today we came again, and it’s probably our last visit. My favorite roast beef was terrible — the meat was tasteless and completely different, and the bread was tough and unpleasant. It feels like the restaurant decided to cut costs, unfortunately at the expense of ingredient quality. I’m very upset. This used to be my favorite breakfast café. P.S. If you compare the two photos, you’ll notice they show entirely different presentations with different ingredients. The second photo was taken in...
