So it was lunch time and we were still reluctant to leave Bandar Bersejarah, not yet. Wanted to check out Jonker Walk, the driver dropped everyone off in front of Tiong Hwa before proceed to park further away. A few hundreds of metres walk seemed like eternity under the scorching sun.
The building where Tiong Hwa operates from is beautiful outside and inside - the facade looks like traditional peranakan house of the past, while inside is clean and tidy. Murals of Melaka of the past in black & white lining up on the wall and a trishaw on display at one corner for that nostalgic feel.
◾We didn't get to try the chicken rice balls during our trip and this restaurant had it. Some might say that the ball is overhyped but for the kids' experience sake, we ordered one whole big plate of it. Guess what? They thought it was interesting and actually finished them.. just drizzled with the dark soy sauce.
◾Both roast chicken & steam chicken provided the protein intake and performed admirably next to the rice. But again, the meat texture was too soft la... not sure why! ◾Siew yuk and char siew were nothing much to shout of. ◾Braised egg and beancurd
Service was what I would call sluggish, and slow given the time of visit due to the swelling crowd during lunch time (it was holiday season). Very popular with tourists in...
Read moreWe almost went to another restaurant cuz chicken rice typically isn’t our thing. Good thing we stayed cuz everything seemingly so plain was packed with flavor and of high quality. The kaya toast was actually grilled over charcoal, the best we’ve ever had. The broth was not to be underestimated, looking like there’s not much going on, but I guarantee you it took a long time and lots of the right ingredients to make it that flavorful. The rice balls themselves were stars of the show, again perfect with the right blend of fat, hints of green onions and ginger, needing no other sauce. Much to my surprise for someone who usually doesn’t like pork, the pork wontons almost had me in tears because one bite brought back memories of eating wontons with my grandpa like a flash flood. The wontons were the exact flavors that I’ve been searching for in the last 20 yrs. All I can say is this meal exceeded my expectations, and the people here really know how to season and process their ingredients. Worthy of a Michelin in my opinion. Wish I could move this restaurant back...
Read moreStumbled upon this place along my walk to Jonker. I decided to give it a try since the menu looks welcoming. It's a big place inside with plenty of tables available. I didn't order the chicken rice since I just had it in the afternoon but I did order the chicken rice ball which tasted good. I didn't manage to try the chicken chop which was ordered by my spouse but she said it was nice as well. Iced tea on the slightly expensive side but since it's in the Jonker area, no question about it but the drinks are good. However, the noodle soup that I ordered tasted very bland. I'm not sure if the kitchen had forgotten to add on the final touch before it was served. I had to add a lot of pepper but it was no avail. To the owners, please go and try the same at Old Town White Coffee if you want to put it on the menu. Food portions are worth the price paid. During my visit, staff goes beyond the working hours since the customer keeps coming in. I must commend the positive attitude given and hope they can continue and give other chicken rice shops a run for...
