What a find! Great craft beers, and great food also. So impressed with the service and knowledge of the staff. Highlight of our time in Lisboa. If your interested I tried all the beverages except the German selection (tried in Germany previously) see my ametuer notes below. I hope they help you find your favourites! 4)Golden iris 6.7%; fruity honey notes, an oaty like taste folows to make for a scottish breakfast like delight! thick on the pallet, good viscosity. Really enjoyable.
10)Dry Stout 4.4%; light on the finish, coffee notes. You could do a lot worse. •Cough sagres preta cough•
12)Bob burning bones 6.1%; nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice on the nose, very little on the pallete
1)NEIPA 5%; big tropical notes, long slightly bitter finish. Perfect for all day drinking in the city. Very nice.
8)Guava Berliner wiese 5%; peach notes, very acidic puts me in mind of a good scrumpy!
15)Czech kolsch 4.5%; Boring beer, rice Krispies on the finish. Maybe a little better than sagres or superbock.
11)Vienna lager 5.3%; chocolaty (ovaltine) on the finish, like malted biscuit; smells like vomit in the nostrils after throwing up. It's not bad!
13)APA 5.2%; taste like the Vienna lager but less ovaltine and tbh worse for it.
14)Oktoberfest beer 5.2%; sour notes of stale sick, like drinking the water from a dehumidifier. Still not the worst
9)Neferrier 5.4%; like NEIPA but shorter l, less bitter finish, worse for it.
3)Musa Frank APA 5%; tropical fruits, full mouth feel, longish but no bitterness. Very nice indeed.
7)Otava Colina urraca vendaval 6%; well rounded IPA, nothing egregious or very different from what you would expect. would be a good session choice if it wasn't 6% 🫠
6)Rafiera red IPA 6%; very exciting beverage, gentle tropical fruit with a strong caramel/toffee finish that tickles the pallete like a bright spring nymph for long after the swallow.
5)Otava Colina DB session NEIPA 4.5%; like the better one from Canil, but weaker, a different fruit taste that my uneducated pallet couldn't tease out. More pineapple than mango. maybe a better session choice.
2)Mean Sardine a run in Madeira 7.5%; like a good English winter bitter with a warm, thick fruity finish. Very agreeable in November. Like a favourite cardigan wrapping you with lovely warmth with every sip....
Read moreGood brewery with a quite large selection of beers on tap: own, local and international. Their beers are rotating, and they have around 12 Canil beers, and 20 other craft beers. Also there are three fridges with a plethora of craft beers from all parts of Europe. A sour with vanilla and pastry taste? Mind-blowing.
As for Canil’s beers, you should really try them to find what you like. European IPAs are a bit different from American ones, so sometimes American IPA means West Coast IPA, sometimes it is East Coast IPAs. The European beers definitely are more predictable - you get what you ask for. I could recommend their Session IPA, crispy and hoppy. It’s very convenient that beers come in 20cl options, so you can try a lot before committing to your favourite ones. There’s also 15 euro flight for 6 Canil beers, but if you are there during the happy hour, it might be more convenient to order beers separately instead as some of them cost only 1 euro.
Service depends on a waiter, but usually is friendly. At some point I just accepted the Portuguese style is a bit different to the US/Canada in terms of service.
Highly recommend their happy hour (5-7pm) with some of the Canil’s small 20cl craft beers (Kolsch, Weiss, Blond Ale, Red Ale, Dry Stout) for 1 euro. Also there is 1 euro food bites during happy hour: cod croquettes with quail egg (croquetes de bacalhau) and sausage croquettes (pepitas de alheira). Loved the cod croquettes. In the menu there’s also pasteis de nata, but savoury ones, with cod. The burger was juicy and meaty. Potatoes could be more crispy, pretty soft - more like a very lightly fried baked potato.
North American music and vibes, playing mostly rock music from 60s to 90s: Janis Joplin, Rage Against the Machines, RHCP. As a Canadian I felt here as in a safe harbour, visited when I wanted to feel a bit...
Read moreThe beers here are fantastic, even for a brewery bar its impressive! What I did not expect was the food to be just as good! We had the cheese bites and they had a pesto and honey glaze on that was to die for!
What really stole the show though was the staff. We were lucky enough to have Priscilla serve us both times we were there and she was just the best. She knew intimitely every beer and brewery they had on the list and wasnt afraid to tell you if she didn't like something and why. She walked you through the beers you had and based her recommendations off the ones she thinks you'll like. She was entertaining and attentive without being overbearing. She managed to do this for all the tables in her section, making every group she serves...
