801 Fish has officially opened their doors in Denver. We had an incredible date night here over the weekend and 801 Fish secured their spot as one of my favorite restaurants in Denver.
We arrived at 801 Fish and we were sat in a booth along the main stretch of the bar. The aesthetic of the restaurant was light, coastal, and stunningly oceanic. The bar boasted a Mermaid Sea Stained Glass Window that stole the show.
Our server Brittany was polished & attentive. She was incredibly knowledgeable on the menu and ran us through her favorites. General Manager, Michael was active on the restaurant floor throughout the duration of our meal; he was vivacious and poised. We had the pleasure of meeting Executive Chef, Kai and he wowed us with everything coming out of the kitchen.
I started off with a cocktail, the Troon. The Troon was made with Absolute Grapefruit Vodka, fresh grapefruit juice, & a sugared rim. A pretty drink in looks and taste - the Troon had the distinct flavor of grapefruit. The grapefruit’s bitterness was tempered by the sweetness of the sugar rim.
The Moscow Mule was made with Belvedere Blackberry Lemongrass Vodka, Ginger Beer, and Fresh Lime Juice. This cocktail was summer in a mule mug - refreshing af with a sparkling fruitiness on the tongue.
801 Fish’s seafood is 36 hours fresh & we tasted that quality in every dish. The selection of crudo, oysters, & shellfish served were highly impressive.
The Uni Toast was made with Hackleback Caviar, Squid Ink Milk Toast, Coconut, Basil, & Fleur De Sel. Lord have mercy - this was one of my favorite bites of the meal. The midnight black toast was aesthetically paired with the bright orange sea urchin. The toast was crisp on the outside and fluffily dense on the inside. The saltiness of the squid ink toast complemented the creamy blanket of sweet uni.
We had half a dozen oysters - the Permaquid and the Ichiban. The oysters were exquisite. The Pemaquid were from Damariscotta River, Maine. The Pemaquids were crisp & had a clean, lemon flavor. The Ichiban from north Puget Sound were deep cupped with mild salinity.
For Chilled Shellfish we had the Colossal Shrimp Cocktail. The shrimp cocktail came to us in a glass goblet with smoke effusing out of it - beautiful presentation. The shrimp were indeed colossal and these bad boys were hands down the best shrimp we have ever had. They were plump, juicy, and each succulent bite provided a burst of mild sweetness from the sea.
Chef Kai surprised us with a Crudo Sampler. Each of the Crudo samples was so fresh and each had it’s own unique accoutrements.
The Dayboat Scallop Ceviche was made with Meyer Lemon Leche De Tigre, Fresno Chili, & Plantain Chips. This was a light plate with mouth-awakening acidity. The soft scallops against the crisp plantain chips made for a stellar texture combination.
The Prince Edward Island Mussels were made with Coconut Curry Broth, Dill, Thai Basil, & Grilled Baguette. The plump mussels soaked up the creamy, Thai spiced coconut curry broth and took on the flavor making for juicy bites.
The Maryland Crab Cake was made with Fresno Vinaigrette, Cucumber, Cara Cara Orange. The crab cake was hot & hearty.
The Lobster Bisque was made with Sourdough Crouton, & Tarragon. The bisque was thick and tasted of butter lobster; both sweet & savory.
For Mains we had the Mahi-Mahi and the Halibut.
The Santa Monica Mahi-Mahi was made with Spring Onion, Gooseberry, & Green Strawberry. The Mahi-Mahi was reminiscent of spring with its fruit dressings.
The Alaskan Halibut was made with Sunchoke, Morel Mushroom, Salsa Verde, & Brown Butter. The mild fish played well with the sweet brown butter and earthiness of the mushrooms.
For dessert we had the Lemon Tart and Truffle Ice Cream.
The Lemon Tart was made with Buckwheat Tart & Matcha Meringue. The tart was a heavenly treat that embodied spring & summer with it’s delicate lemon zest.
The Truffle Ice Cream was made with Black Truffle, Grana Padano, & Cocoa. The ice cream had a mellow sweetness to it that reminded me of...
Read moreHello everyone, this nightmare I don’t even know how it started, but I was dining alone and I ordered a lot of things. (I do vlogging) and go to restaurants to show my followers, anyway…I ordered a drink and I sipped on it a few times then checked the menu and called the waiter and ordered another drink to what he said that’s illegal and he went and said that in the state of Colorado only one drink per table per person, which I found that to be funny so I asked him if I could record him saying that to what he said no, so I was like cool no worries I get cameras are intimidating, so I continued with my life. I waited for my meals and my drink (because he took the drink I had because apparently it is illegal) so I waited and waited and then the manager came and kicked me out saying I tried to record the waiter and that I was too drunk (keep in mind I order food just to try it and same with drinks I don’t even drink full drinks I am only 103 lbs, can’t eat everything or drink everything I order, and the manager (this man n the picture) threatened to call the police on me, when I didn’t even make a fuzz I just accepted it; he kept asking for a card with my name on it, when in my country they don’t print your name on cards because of privacy 😱 and he kept saying he was going to call the police so I told him do it, to what he just stood there eyeing me to leave) wanting me to pay but never brought the pin pad 😱 so I was just there sitting awkwardly for 20 minutes for the pin pad to be handed until he finally did it, honestly so awkward and bizarre, if I’m being kicked out at least bring the bill asap since you urged me to go but you still make me sit there awkwardly waiting like I’m at your mercy for god knows what reason 🤷🏻♀️ to this moment i don’t know why I got kicked out when I respectfully asked the waiter to repeat it.
Edit: as you can see their level of pettiness unmentioning me, is just like what a high schooler would do, you can tell they aren’t the owners because owners actually take care of their costumers and not just that but everything was just wrong I am still waiting for a response on why I got kicked out I even showed the manager my gallery so he could see that I recorded nothing I just asked because I had never heard of one drink per person per table but...
Read moreTaking a chance on a new restaurant can be scary, but this place is the exception to the rule. It won't be long until you will be hard-pressed to find a reservation available for this gem in downtown Denver. As tourists, my wife and I were celebrating our honeymoon in Denver. On a Saturday night we were trying to find the perfect place to eat a special dinner, and to be honest, we couldn't find a reservation anywhere else, by chance we stumbled on 801 Fish. Well, I'm here to tell you, We are the lucky ones. When you walk in you are taken back by the amazing decor, and the classy and comfortable feel. The service from the minute you walk in makes you feel welcome, and like royalty. As we were seated, our server, Brittany welcomed us with a smile, and an amuse Bouche of Lahvosh with hints of lemon and black pepper, we found their wine list to be extensive with a little something for everybody. We opted to start our meal by sharing a wonderful bottle of wine and an amazing jumbo crab cake, with a delicious vinaigrette and accompaniments that were handcrafted with great care. Buckle your seatbelt because this was only the beginning... As we couldn't decide which entrees we wanted (as there were so many delicious options), we ordered the halibut with mushrooms and sunchokes, and the linguine with tomato butter, clams and served with toasted bread. When we took the first bite, we had to take a second to wonder if the flavors we were experiencing or real or if we were in a fantasy world. This was the most amazing food I have had in years. My wife and I kept swapping plates because we wanted to keep experiencing every bite of this incredibly meticulous, crafted art. as we were eating our food, word got out it was our honeymoon and we were treated to a glass of champagne by the general manager and congratulations from many members of the staff, including our wonderful server assistant, Manfred. by the time desert got to us, which was a delicious lemon, tart with Matcha, blackberries and brûléed meringue. My bride and I had experienced tears more than once, by the incredible experience we were having. The staff made us feel like family and royalty. I would urge anybody who has the chance to experience 801 Fish, do it! .... I just hope next time we're in Denver we will be able to...
