Made a day trip and drove up from San Diego to come try Heng Heng and it was so worth it! The restaurant is kind of small so expect to have a bit of a wait. Also.. WALK UP TO THE COUNTER AND PUT YOUR NAME ON THE LIST! We got there and waited for someone to get our name and how many people we were and the servers did not. We didn’t know their was a list and a group of people walked in and out their name on the list so we lost our spot. But that’s okay we still ate.
We ordered the Hainana over rice, they only had white meat and we had came all this way so we ordered it anyways, Dry Egg Noodles with Crispy Chicken, Crispy Fish over rice, Crispy Pork and Zaab Crispy Mixed (chicken and pork). The Hainana chicken had the least amount of flavor when eating it with everything else we ordered. The noodles with chicken were served with fried chicken and it was pretty good. The crispy fish over rice tastes so fresh with such a light batter over it and steamy hot in the inside! The crispy port was also very good but it was the same crispy pork in the egg noodles so we could have saved out money and skipped it. And the Zaab crispy mix was a mix of chicken and pork tossed in sauce that had such amazing citrusy and spicy seasoning with onions and that.. that was the star...
Read moreI was gonna order here 3 days ago, i kept calling so I can just pick up the order since im rushing as I have to go somewhere. Called 3x no answer just kept on ringing. So i decided to just go there. As i entered and stand in front of the register, 2 lady employees just kept walking, no word from them, no greeting, so after 5 mins I said I would like to order for take out. The one said “ok we will be right with you”, waited like another 5 mins the other lady went to the register and start doing something there. Not even a word from her asking me if i need something (different lady), a few mins after she asked what I want sonI said i wanted to order for take out. She said it will take 15-20 mins, so I said nevermind cause Im really in a hurry. Before i leave I ask them what is the phone number, the lady showed me the menu, below is their number. I told her I was calling that number so i can order, she said, “ oh sorry we were busy”! If they only answer the phone then i wouldn’t waste my time going there that way i know how long it will take for the order to get ready. Been here like 5 times already, the wait is long but its fine. I always go for dine-in. But with this experience i would say bad...
Read moreThis is a rendition of the beloved Chicken and Rice dish with a Thai-inspired twist of flavors. Similar to Hainan Chicken, but certainly not the same. Here this dish is paired with either regular or garlic rice topped with a poached chicken which they debone for serving. Thai sauces are available to further the experience.
Their fried variety of proteins is done also equally well. The breading is crispy and the pieces are juicy. Fish, Pork, and Chicken really deliver some really good crispy examples.
The garlic rice is very fragrant and inviting. Along with their sauces, everything is heavily seasoned and I found myself very thirsty after my meal.
The star of the show here is the proteins, but I find the sauces distracting. Poaching of the chicken also creates a more rubbery texture and I find the clean flavors of chicken missing.
Although the dishes are hearty and delicious in their own right, I don't think the cover is as good as the original unless you are looking for...
