Nestled between the side streets of West Hollywood is Sushi Ajito. The restaurant serves a variety of Japanese cuisine, ranging from sushi to sashimi, ramen, poke bowls, udon, and sushi burritos. Ajito also features a fine selection of appetizers, including unique dishes such as baked green mussels, popcorn lobster, and octopus salad. There are alcoholic drinks available, including Asahi beer, a variety of sake (house hot sake, sauri sake, nigori sake), Harajuku draft drinks, and wines (chardonnay, merlot, pinot noir, and plum wine). For desserts, Ajito offers a variety of ice creams, including green tea, mochi, and tempura flavors.
The Japanese cuisine joint is outfitted with bright lanterns and beachy art. The walls are decorated with cherry blossom paintings and endearing polaroid photos of their valued customers. Ajito has a very welcoming atmosphere, temptingly inviting guests in for an unforgettable meal.
I ended up ordering the spicy ramen (which can be prepared vegan), as well as the sweet potato tempura roll. The ramen, which came out first, included carrot, seaweed, and bean sprouts with the noodles. The dish was relatively simple, but its broth excited my tastebuds with a savory kick. The sweet potato tempura rolls came out six stuffed with delicious chunks of, interestingly, tempura avocado. The rolls were piled high with tempura sweet potato sticks, and covered in a delicious, sweet glaze. While the sweet potato tempura seemed to be mostly tempura batter–there wasn’t much sweet potato to be battered within–the tempura made for a delicious, textured crunch. The icing on top of the dish was the edible flower that crowded my pile of sushi.
The service at Ajito was lovely. My food was prepared relatively quickly at the sushi bar in front of me, proving Ajito’s commitment to fresh ingredients. My server was attentive to my dietary preferences, and I had a wide variety of vegan options to choose from...
Read moreFirst visit we walked in with doubt, tried out a few things, walked out impressed and amazed. Second visit, tried the majority of their sushi menu along with some of the chef’s specials, now I can finally give an honest and conclusive review. This little hidden gem’s sushi is amazing, one of the best I ever had in the United States. The sushi chef is a master of his craft, and you can see it in his eyes he takes a lot of pride in his art and is constantly pursing and reaching for the next stage of his art. The other items on the menu? Forget about it. They are mediocre and rather pricy for what you get. Honestly speaking I don’t think the sushi chef which is the owner even care the slightest for the other items on his menu, he’s so dedicated in his art of sushi, which is a great thing for a sushi restaurant. As for the price of the sushi, they are fair compare to other sushi restaurants, however you may find sushi with this kind of quality being priced much higher in more fancier settings. Sometime people come to this kind of establishment with the hesitance of whether they should invest this much money into sushis you get from a strip mall restaurant, trust me I was there with you, but I can assure you right now, every penny you pay in this restaurant for sushi is going to be so much worth it, and you will always leave the restaurant surprised...
Read moreThis is not simply food, this is art. These days, when I walk into a sushi restaurant, especially one in an urban-ish area next door to a Philly steak shop, I brace. I brace because the fish will be too cold from the freezer. I brace because everything will be too expensive, the portions too small, the food lacking in creativity. This was not the case at Sushi Ajito. From the start, the man behind the bar that I would eventually realize is the owner, was warm and welcoming. I ordered and the sushi began to flow. Beet juice marinated sake sashimi? The flavors were absolutely phenomenal. The scallop was incredible, perfectly fresh with that hint of lemon but anything but generic. I would have taken photos but it was too good and I couldn't help myself. I dont know what all the other flavors were in the various dishes that I ordered but they were... perfect. Oh and the gyoza was probably the best I have ever had. Perfectly crispy without being too fried feeling, the insides... again no words. The unagi sashimi plate was sizzling like it had come out of a tandoori oven complete with the bed of grilled onions. I ate everything. I cannot entirely describe what this man and his kitchen does with the dishes but I would drive a distance to...
