How do you cool down from Maui’s sun blazing down on you while at the beach or swimming in the pool?…you go to Gus’ Shave Ice Bus in Kihei.
Conveniently parked on the side of Worldmark Resort Rentals, it’s just a quick walk in any direction. You can’t miss this authentic VW blue & white bus with the waving “Shave Ice” banner blown by the wind. Btw, Gus is the bus…not the man inside.
James was super friendly and helpful with getting our local dessert started. As we were still deciding on flavors, he started shaving down & packing the ice ready to be flavored. My girls picked anuenue (rainbow) flavors of Strawberry + Pineapple + Blue Hawaii. They demolished their dessert before my husband & I could order our picks and pay our bill.
We chose the Fruit Shave (if you know Snow Factory…you’re in for a treat) of fruit frozen in ice then shaved. We chose the Strawberry Papaya + Coconut Cream flavor. It had the same snowy fluffy texture we’ve missed over the past years. I loved it especially since it’s not overly sweet like the sweetness of Shave Ice syrups.
After we paid and talked story with James we headed off to swim in the pool. But my husband and I needed to have more goodness…
…so I took his order, grabbed my MIL and went back to this ono (delicious) dessert bus. For my hubby, I ordered his size L Shave Ice with Dragon’s Blood + Honeydew Melon + Pineapple, with vanilla ice cream & vanilla snow cap. I got a size S Fruit Shave - POG flavored with vanilla snow cap. My MIL got Shave Ice with Piña Colada + Tiger’s Blood + Orange Creamsicle and ice cream.
We were all very satisfied with the price, quality and flavors! Definitely recommend and will return again soon. MAUI needs your business, so PLEASE COME TO MAUI and share your aloha with local...
Read moreIf you are in Kihei, paying a visit to Gus the Bus is an absolute must! I expected the shave ice to be amazing, which it was. What surprised me was the fruit shave.
Be prepared for your mind to be blown. Que up the angel choir and make sure that you are seated in a safe location before you try your first bite.
I've never had anything quite like it in my life. Its like eating fluffy snow that transforms into a refreshingly cold fruit smoothy as it melts on your tongue. Heavenly. True food joy.
If its your first time trying Hawaiian shave ice I highly recommend that you try the Dragon's Blood syrup. Don't be intimidated by the name. Its a blend of strong dragon fruit and raspberry flavor with a hint of blood orange and strawberry kiwi. Trust me when I tell you that you will be happy to be punched in the mouth with this crazy amazing fruit flavor.
Finally, I have to give a huge thank you to the owner's daughter for letting my wife join the end of the line at closing time. It was our last night in Kihei and I had been terribly ill with food poisoning all week. I had recovered enough to enjoy one final treat before we left the island. My wife really enjoyed chatting with her while waiting in line to be the last customer of the day. Turns out that the family that owns and runs the business is from the same part of Washington state where my wife was born and raised. They traveled and lived all over the world for many years and ended up settling on Maui and calling it home.
So, in conclusion my foodie friends, do yourself a favor and get a refreshing authentic Hawaiian...

I went right before they closed at night, and I ordered strawberry mango pineapple with ice cream. They couldn't make full size because it ran out....so they asked and suggested guava mango pineapple to put on top to make it full. They were both amazing 👏 especially with ice cream and coconut drizzle.
It's shave ice with shaved frozen fruit.
Oh and coconut syrup on top was amazing 👏 can't taste coconut, it just adds sweetness of fruit.
My daughter said.... this is the first place to come back to if we visit maui again! We have to ! 🤣 Yes definitely, it's so good, so why not!
The service was great! We were the only customer at that time, so it could be why, but he was nice enough to take picture with us, and gave us extra spoons to share..... well, after we tasted, my daughter wished she bought her own. Lol I'm sure he would not have time to take picture if it was their busy time.
I should've asked him where we could park. I saw somebody else parked behind the van to buy shavevice.... I wonder if that's how.
It's funny and cool idea to serve shave ice out of mini van. Fyi, picture is same shave ice, just with and...
