The ice cream was great, I’m not going to let a couple exterior factors detract from a superior rating for ice cream. Read further below for those “bad” points…
The good points: I ordered a Kesar milkshake, after learning Kesar is a traditional flavor in India. Confession: I know nothing about Indian ice cream! But this was sooo good, I loved it. The shakes are traditional: just their homemade ice cream blended with milk, making it the perfect blend of refreshing and creamy. In fact, both my wife and son wish they ordered what I did!
However our 4yo son also loved his ice cream, he got a scoop of mango and a scoop of chocolate.
My wife got peanut butter chocolate, as she’s a big fan of Reese’s. However, this was more a blended fresh peanut and chocolate taste, not a Reese’s taste. It was good, just not what she was expecting. Based on this I would suggest getting a flavor more traditional to this place.
Some challenges: PARKING The parking attendant in that lot was a straight up HAWK. He was giving people tickets left and right, even though there is 30 minute parking for free. Tons of people arguing in the lot, plus ice cream patrons talking and worrying about it. It has to affect business! Our ice cream was running late but we were able to make it back to the car just in time. Whew! TIP: you’re better off parking on the street or another place for peace of mind, especially since the lot in front of the shop is super tight.
ORDER CONFUSION They don’t call out names with orders, and some random bachelorette lady swooped in and grabbed our ice cream before we could say anything. Then the workers didn’t realize it was ours and I had to explain it was ours, without a receipt (they didn’t give me a receipt). They need to clear this sort of thing up if they’re going to handle busy times effectively.
RANDOM DUDE This is not their fault at all, but the area is somewhat rough. There was a half-baked barefoot dude loitering on the stairs eating food during our whole visit. I could’ve tried to address or engage him, but I was with family and had the time limit in the back of my head. It was just awkward, I was unprepared to encounter this guy going up the stairs to the...
Read moreI will definitely have to come back to try other flavors. I got a regular cup (two scoops) of Chai Spice and Kesar (saffron). The Chai Spice actually tasted like Chai, with no artificial flavors. I've never had saffron-flavored food besides rice, and it was much more floral than I would have ever expected. Both flavors were mellow, not too strong, but still there!
Park Happy offers free parking for 20 minutes, and that was perfect for me. I was able to sit and enjoy my ice cream in that amount of time.
The inside of the shop is larger than it looks from the outside and has enough seating for a small group of people. It's also bright from the natural sunlight that comes in from the windows and is brightly decorated with pops of color and lighting. There is also seating outside on the balcony.
I came in around 3pm on a Wednesday and there were some students studying. It was indeed quiet enough to do so.
Guru, the owner, is a mild-mannered patient man. I told him it was my first time coming in, and he kindly told me to take my time and that I could taste any flavors I was curious about. There are plenty of flavors of try! 19 flavors of ice cream, to be exact.
Somehow, I missed the Kulfi as I was scanning the board, so I will absolutely be going back for that!
There are games on the tables like chess. Neat.
I like how the music reflects the culture of the owner(s). While it's totally cool to want to play music that will attract customers of the region, I like how the owner(s) chose not to conform.
I wish this company the best! I hope they succeed because their Indian style ice...
Read moreA cute Indian creamery + cafe with a really cozy ambiance on 21st. In addition to homemade Indian ice cream, they also sell homemade puff pastries, chai, coffee, milkshakes, and kulfi.
The ice cream flavors are unique and innovative -- mango, peanut butter chocolate, chai spice, strawberry white chocolate, Indian coffee, and my new personal favorite: saffron (kesar)!
I got the saffron and chai ice cream, the paneer puff, and kesar and mango kulfi and they were all fantastic!
The paneer puff was very fresh and filled with vegetables and cheese and came with a mint chutney and spicy tamarind sauce.
Kulfi is an Indian "popsicle" that is denser (because it's not whipped) and creamier than ice cream. The mango kulfi I had was made with mango puree and cream.
Super excited to introduce this place to y'all.
-- There are also an assortment of authentic Indian desserts and drinks now! I got the masala shikanji which is a spiced fizzy "lemonade" with ginger, mint, cumin, fennel, coriander, pepper, and more -- it's really interesting and not for the faint of heart. The owner grinds the spices by hand in a mortar and pestle for each drink for...
