I recently purchased a Cake from the Tribeka location.
I would like to start out by saying that I tried to resolve this with Billy’s before I came to write a review and I was left even more shocked by the lack of customer service than I was by the cake that I received.
Also, they are going to comment that I am trying to “blackmail” them by writing this review. They will certainly put their account in the comments of this review, but this is more about principle at this point more than anything else. I clearly will not be able to work with them going forward to resolve my concerns.
I chose this bakery because I wanted to support a local small business versus going to Magnolia bakery.
I went into the Tribeca location to order the cake I wanted, in person, so there was no confusion as to the scope or complexity of the cake for my friend's 40th birthday. I was told by the kind employee that they don't take cake orders in person but that I should order the cake online and email the orders department after I place the order.
I ordered a “hand decorated cake” from the website with an additional charge for more decor. I was happy to pay the amount if they delivered what I wanted based on the inspiration image I provided. I was emailed the next day that they were unable to do the fluting that I requested (which I felt was the complex portion of the cake I paid for) and we emailed about the color of the icing. See attached the images of the inspiration versus what was received.
I picked up the cake on Friday at 5pm and the party was at 8pm so there was really no fixing what was made. I needed the cake for the party and took what was delivered and made some personal changes to the cake to try to salvage what I had requested vs what I received.
Yes, we consumed the cake at the restaurant and realized that the cake was stale and very dry once we cut into it which came as a major disappointment even further.
I expressed my concerns and disappointment to the bakery, not only with the dryness, but also the cost based on what was received. I paid for a more complex cake because I was asking for something different from what they offer normally. I felt that based on what I received, that the cost of the “hand decorated cake” was not justified.
Here is what Billy's felt was worth the cost that I paid:
The base price (without decorations or any other upgrades) for an 8” Vanilla Cake is $80. The Pastel Yellow frosting is an additional $10. The White Chocolate Drip is an additional $55. The total for your cake should have been $145. I paid $159 total.
I'm sorry, but you are telling me that a white chocolate drizzle is $55? Empire Bakery does this same cake for $95 and will even do the fluting I asked for as part of the cost.
Billy’s gave me a $16 refund but I find that unacceptable. Based on their website I felt that $95 -$105 would have warranted the cost of the cake. The difference is all I asked for. I was not expecting a full refund nor did I ask for a full refund since we consumed what little cake we did.
Just beware of the bakery that you buy from. Take the...
Read moreI’ve visited this location several times. When walking in the area, you are put under a spell by the aroma of the goodies which compels you to enter to buy some treats. Every time I’ve visited the location the staff has been so hospitable. Before COVID, there were seats and tables if you want to enjoy your treats inside. However, they still have a bench on the outside of the store if you want to sit and enjoy. The bakery sells different goodies from mini cupcakes, cupcakes, cupcake cups, cakes, cookies, cookie sandwiches, scones, bars, brownies, breakfast items, etc. They even offer vegan and gluten free options. This location usually accepts cash and card however they are not accepting cash at this time. My favorite cupcake is the Lemon Cupcake with cream cheese icing. It’s so moist and delicious. I even like the Crowd Pleaser Cupcake which is chocolate and vanilla batter with chocolate and vanilla buttercream. The cupcakes are also a large size. Billy’s also offers accessories such as candles and birthday signs, etc. which is beneficial to get everything you may need for your sweets while you’re there. I highly recommend you give this place a try, you won’t be...
Read moreI ordered the "Valentine's Day" on Tuesday cake to be delivered to my wife on Friday. I had a TERRIBLE experience. Here is my ordeal. *First off, I tried ordering on their website but later had to call because the site was broken. *The lady that took my order switched the delivery amount on me from $30 to $35 *Later that day my wife told me she would be WFH on vals day (Friday). I called to learn what are my options. The guy I spoke with said they don't do refunds after 48 hrs. I said I only ordered yesterday. He then changed it to 24 hrs, rambled a little bit then said they don't do refunds. His only option was to donate it to charity if I wanted. How insensitive. *I informed my wife about what I planned and she said to go ahead but should be delivered to a co-worker. *I called Billy's back. As if to win the award for Worst Experience, I was told to |'d have to contact the delivery company myself to request the change. *They left the receipt in the order! Making my wife furious I paid $35 for 6" cake delivery. *I was told the cake was dry. The picture I saw did not match what was on their...
