I placed a takeout order and asked the server how long it would take. She told me 10 minutes, so I booked an Uber ride. The ride arrived after 15 minutes, and I asked the driver to wait for a moment. Unfortunately, I ended up waiting another 10 minutes, but the food still wasn’t ready. I asked the server for an update several times, and each time, she apologized and assured me it would be ready soon. In total, it took 40 minutes for my food to come out—30 minutes longer than I was initially told.

To make things worse, I was charged $10 for the Uber ride I couldn’t take, while the food itself cost only $12. When I asked if there could be any compensation for the situation, the server apologized again but said they couldn’t offer anything. It was only after I asked for a refund that she mentioned there was only one chef working that day, which caused the delay. This should have been communicated to me before I placed the order, or at least during the multiple times I checked in.

My wife recommended this place, and I was really looking forward to trying the food, but I’m extremely disappointed in the service and how the server handled the situation. I hope they can improve their communication and overall customer experience...

Out of all the restaurants I have had in all of the countries I have been to, this one takes the cake as my favorite. I got the jerk chicken platter, I have had jerk chicken a few times before. The jerk chicken was so good I dang near cried. It was served over a bed of rice and beans, which were both excellent. The jerk chicken itself had a fair bit of spice to it, but a much deeper level of flavor. It was seasoned to absolute perfection. On the side were some fried plantains. Typically, I don't like plantains; however, this plantain was amazing and acted as a great palate cleanser to re-enjoy the initial shock of the chicken. My wife got the surf and turf, which consisted of the same ingredients, with the addition of shrimp and a papaya mango habanero sauce and a slightly different seasoning on the chicken. The mango habanero papaya sauce was decadent, with a subtle heat to it. The shrimp were amazing, and there was a good amount spice to them. Both me and my wife ate until we were stuffed and had a whole other meal leftover. The portions are massive, and you definitely get your money's worth. We will be returning and bringing all of our loved ones because they need to...

The ambience at Kafe Mamai is a delightful escape, with every detail carefully curated to create a genuine island vibe. From the vibrant colors to the soothing music, it's like a tropical getaway right in the heart of Salt Lake City.

Now, let's talk about the star of the show – the food! Every dish is a masterpiece, bursting with flavors that make your taste buds dance. Personally, I couldn't get enough of the oxtail and the jerk chicken wings. The oxtail was so tender, and the jerk chicken wings had the perfect balance of spice and smokiness.

What sets Kafe Mamai apart is not just the incredible cuisine but also the passion and love that the owner pours into every aspect of the restaurant. It's evident that he takes pride in delivering an authentic and memorable experience for his guests.

If you're looking for a culinary journey to the Caribbean without leaving Salt Lake City, Kafe Mamai is the place to be. It's more than just a meal; it's a celebration of culture and flavors that will leave you craving more. I can't wait to return and explore more of their menu – a...

I wound up at Kafe Mamai because I needed a safe spot to stash the garden gnome I’d rescued from my in-laws’ yard. Yes, bizarre, but that little courtyard was perfect for hiding him, and I figured I’d reward myself after the stealth mission. The walk along Gallivan Avenue felt like a pilgrimage across the plains like our ancestors took to get to the promise land, anticipation building with every step toward that warmly lit kafé. When I cracked open the door, the scent of jerk chicken and plantains hit me like a hug, and the staff greeted me with genuine toothless smiles. I went with the jerk chicken platter, savoring juicy meat and crisp plantains that were comforting, delicious, but not life altering (it’s just food, so chill out). Still, there was something five‑star worthy about its heart and soul, the way it filled the little courtyard paired perfectly, with my odd little gnome heist. By the last bite, I was convinced that sometimes a meal doesn’t have to be perfect, to feel absolutely unforgettable.
