Maize Tacos gets a really good 4.8/5 for me and is now one of my new go-to Carne Asada Taco places in Salt Lake! The Tortilla de Maiz was very awesome, and while on the thicker side, not overwhelming and not dry. Great corn flavor. I would 100% start with the Carne Asada. Great quality of meat, great spices, but lets the meat speak for itself, tender, and the al carbon char grilled cook is one of the best around. I wish more places did this with their Carne Asada. One of the highlights of Maize is the fresh guacamole they put on top. Changes the game from other Taco places. Very fresh, all mashed by hand every day. I also think the Pastor is very good. Great sweet pork flavor, fresh Pina on top, and well spiced. Carnitas are good, not my particular favorite style, and it seemed almost different between the 2 locations, so those might be inconsistent. Chicken Tinga tasted very fresh, all quality, just a little under flavored for Tinga.
I have been to both locations, I do prefer the one in Downtown Salt Lake, but Draper is great as long as you go earlier in the dinner hours like 5-6:30. You want to get the Pastor and meats more fresh and it seems like it loses the freshness as it goes into the evening. My only real complaint was the Horchata. For an amazing Taqueria like Maize, I hope they put more love into their Horchata soon and not a commerical fountain brand! Les doy cinco estrellas si cambian su Horchata,...
Read moreI wish this weren’t a mixed review, because my tacos tasted totally delicious... I just had to eat them with a fork and knife. The Cane asada was crisp and tasty, the pastor delicious and the chicken, which I’m usually on the fence about was was moist and delicious. All came stuffed with meat and dressed with unique toppings and sauces. Like the name implies, Maize also makes their own fresh tortillas.
While also delicious, this integral part of a street taco was just not up to the task. I picked up my chicken taco and the bottom completely dropped out. I set it back down and decided go for the El Pastor. A little bit better, but I had to hold it together really tightly to get to my mouth. As sauce dripped down my fingers, I decided a fork and knife would be required here.
This presented an additional problem, as the tacos were served in a basket lined with a piece of paper. The paper had grown soggy, and needed to be picked out of most of my bites. My tortillas either needed a few more minutes on the griddle, or to be served on an actual plate. Ultimately they were delicious, but a lot of work to...
Read moreLet me start off by saying this, I hate paying more than $2 for a taco. I was asked if I wanted to come eat here and thought sure lets try!
Upon arriving, I looked over the prices and thought no way.. I can go down the street and get a taco for $1! However, the talavera tile and the loteria pictures convinced me to try.
Y'all.. Let's take a moment to see that these tacos, no matter how much I didn't want my cheap self to admit, are D E L I C I O U S. They are stuffed full, they have options and MY GOODNESS THE HANDMADE CORN TORTILLAS are to die for. I took a bite of the taco de camaron, and it reminded me of going hanging out with my grandma and making toritillas in Mexico. Y'all, I just couldn't deny it. It's so good!
The space is large and there is an abundance of choice for food. The service was friendly and welcoming and it's a great place to come on a date or bring the family.
I would highly recommend trying it out. 1-2 tacos with a corn or a quesadilla and a corn and you'll be more than full. Give it a try, you will...
