I needed to take a trip to Savannah to pick up my wife from the airport, so my son suggested that we make a little day trip out of it and try out a new restaurant in town, Poe's Tavern. I checked out their menu online and noticed several interesting burger choices, so I was all in!

At the time of our visit, the restaurant had been open for about two weeks. The location is a couple blocks from Savannah's City Market in a building that once housed Fire Station Number 2. The remodeled building that now houses Poe's Tavern still has two huge garage doors that accommodated fire engines in days gone by.

So, the restaurant's building has an interesting history and the present-day vibe of both the interior and exterior is quite nice. The exterior brick is painted light gray with two beautiful large wooden doors at the center welcoming guests inside. At the side of the building you can still find the dedication plaques for the firehouse. If you look closely above the plaques near the structure's roof you can view a "hidden" likeness of Edgar Allen Poe's face. Pretty cool!

The interior has a modern industrial look to it and many Poe paintings and memorabilia adorn the green dining room walls. Cast iron chandeliers hang from the ceiling, recalling the days of the 1800s when Poe was writing poems and short stories. Speaking of short stories, the bathroom walls are papered with pages from some of his work.

But what about the food? Well, it's really good! My son ordered the Tell-Tale Heart burger (fried egg, bacon, cheddar cheese), my granddaughter got the Black Cat burger (grilled onions. bacon, chili, pimento cheese), and I ordered the Hop Frog burger (BBQ sauce, bacon, jack cheese). We carefully sliced each burger into portions so that we could each sample the three different varieties. My son asked me which I liked best. I had a hard time deciding because they were all so different but so good! At the heart of all the burgers is a half pound of high quality beef that is ground in house. The burgers are cooked with a subtle char taste that is just delicious!

I judge restaurants not only by their entrees, but also their sides. Our side choices included French fries (just the right amount of crispiness), onion straws (crunchy strands of onion goodness), and potato salad. All the sides were very good, but the one that stood out the most for me was the potato salad. It had a lot going on with various ingredients and herbs, and was definitely a well-executed upscale version of the classic side dish.

So, the food was excellent, our server was friendly and helpful, the atmosphere was pleasant, and the bathrooms were clean. There really isn't anything negative about our experience and I can't wait to return with my wife to experience their food again! This place is definitely on my short list of nice, casual places to dine...

Poe's Tavern: Where Every Bite Tells a Story

Poe's Tavern is a cozy gem that promises a laid-back atmosphere and mouthwatering burgers that are simply to die for.

Upon stepping into Poe's, you're immediately transported to a literary haven adorned with Edgar Allan Poe-inspired decor, paying homage to the legendary author. The ambiance is casual and inviting, perfect for a relaxed meal with friends or family.

But let's talk about the main attraction: the burgers. Oh boy, are they something special! I recently sank my teeth into their signature "Tell-Tale Heart" burger, stacked high with juicy beef, crispy bacon, melted cheese, and all the fixings. Each bite was a flavor explosion, leaving me craving more with every savory bite. And let's not forget about the perfectly toasted bun that held everything together like a culinary masterpiece.

Wash it all down with one of their craft beers or a refreshing cocktail from the bar, and you've got the recipe for a perfect dining experience.

But what truly sets Poe's Tavern apart is the friendly and attentive service. The staff members are not only knowledgeable about the menu but also genuinely passionate about ensuring that every guest leaves with a smile. Whether you're a regular or a first-time visitor, you're sure to feel like part of the Poe's family from the moment you walk in.

If you find yourself craving a burger that's as delicious as it is memorable, look no further than Poe's Tavern. With its cozy atmosphere, mouthwatering menu, and top-notch service, it's a dining destination that's sure to leave you coming back for more. Just be warned: once you take a bite, you may find yourself...

Worst service ever!! We had a reservation but saw that the bar was empty so we decided to sit there because typically we find that you get better service and a better pour at the bar. The bar was less than half full and the dining room was even less than that. The two bartenders (a larger male with floppy, longish hair, and a female with auburn hair and pointed features) never introduced themselves, so we don't have names, but my receipt says server was "PM B" (6:35pm on 6/6/35)?? Anyway, they pretty much chit chatted among themselves and wandered back and forth behind the bar the whole time, never really making eye contact with us. We had to flag them down for everything, including a refill on our iced teas, and then the women only brought back ONE iced tea for my husband, and seemed put out when I informed her that I also needed one. We didn't have silverware either. We ordered a buffalo shrimp salad, which was underwhelming but tasted ok; and fries with cheese and bacon, which were soggy, and looked as though they had been sitting under the warmer for quite some time. We barely touched them but no one bothered to ask if there was anything wrong. They never checked back in to ask, after food was brought. But despite the mediocre food, it's the abysmal service that really sticks in my craw. I ended up leaving a $3 tip on $34.76, and put a sad face next to the tip, hoping that they would recognize that we were very unsatisfied with the service and were not just cheap. They truly didn't even deserve that....

The service here is amazing!!! All the hosts and waiters were lovely and so fun. They seemed to enjoy their jobs and I enjoyed that a lot. This is def a tavern! I expected more of a bookish vibe. But the meals were poe themed! Food was super yummy!!! Large portions and yummy combos. I had the salmon tacos and was so full and happy

Spent 6 days in Savannah and came to Poe's three times: 1) late night dinner with a friend, 2) closing time shots with a couple friends, and 3) early lunch (they open at 11) with about 7 friends. 1) had the shrimp tacos, which were good. My buddy had the salmon tacos which looked even better. 2) We tried to get a drink along the river but places were putting their stools up on the tables at 10:00 on a Tuesday night. I remembered Poe's and Google Maps said it was open until midnight. We arrived just after 10 PM to find them starting to close. The bartender reluctantly allowed us to order "one drink" so we did. While sitting there, AGM Chandler came out of the back and started chatting us up. We were no longer being rushed to drink and leave. Chandler made us feel very welcome and even bought us a shot to celebrate my retirement. We made plans right then and there to return for brunch/lunch before leaving town, as long as Chandler would be there. 3) I wasn't very hungry so I just had the hand-cut fries with Edgar's Drunken Chili and Cheddar Cheese. Tasty. Other orders included burgers, quesadillas, nachos, and salads. Everyone enjoyed their lunch, and Chandler gave us Raven stickers and other fun stuff. It was a great way to end our Savannah stay. They also have a private party room (which we should have used for my party, but alas) that looks like it would sit 20-25 people pretty nicely.
