I recently had the pleasure of trying Old Prague Ham, and I must say it was a truly delightful experience. Old Prague Ham is a traditional Czech delicacy that has gained worldwide recognition for its exceptional flavor and quality.
The first thing that struck me about Old Prague Ham was its enticing aroma. As soon as I unwrapped the package, a rich and smoky scent filled the air, instantly making my mouth water. The ham itself had a beautiful golden-brown color, with a perfectly caramelized glaze that added to its visual appeal.
When I took my first bite, I was blown away by the tender and succulent texture of the ham. It practically melted in my mouth, revealing layers of delicate, well-marbled meat. The flavor was nothing short of exceptional. The smokiness was prominent but not overpowering, perfectly balanced with a hint of sweetness from the glaze. The ham had a rich, savory taste that left me craving for more.
One thing that sets Old Prague Ham apart is its traditional preparation method. It is slowly smoked over beechwood for hours, allowing the flavors to develop and infuse deeply into the meat. This traditional approach truly pays off, as the ham is imbued with a unique and distinct character that sets it apart from other hams.
Another aspect that impressed me was the craftsmanship and attention to detail that goes into producing Old Prague Ham. The producers take pride in using only the finest quality pork, sourced from trusted local suppliers. The ham is carefully hand-trimmed, ensuring that every slice is consistent and of the highest standard. The result is a product that exudes quality and reflects the dedication of the people behind it.
Whether enjoyed on its own, as part of a charcuterie board, or incorporated into various recipes, Old Prague Ham is a true gastronomic delight. Its versatility allows it to shine in a variety of dishes, from sandwiches and salads to pasta and quiches. The flavors it imparts elevate any recipe, adding depth and richness that is hard to match.
In conclusion, Old Prague Ham is a true gem among cured meats. Its exceptional flavor, tender texture, and traditional preparation make it a standout choice for any discerning food lover. If you have the opportunity to try Old Prague Ham, I highly recommend doing so. It is a culinary experience that you won't...
Read moreYes, it's expensive. Yes, it's for tourists. Yes, an unwitting or shy person can get "overcharged". Yes, it is really tasty ham.
This ham, like literally every other single business in the town centre, is overpriced. All those restaurants surrounding the square? Overpriced. Saying "just go to one of the restaurants instead" is hilarious.
Prague, especially Old & New Town, has very little "street food". It certainly has no street hawkers, except for this place and maybe a couple more. This is the closest you get to Czech street food. So, for what it is, it's good.
The ham we got was absolutely divine. Not fatty at all. I like a good ham, and I've had some truly amazing pork in local traditional Czech restaurants. This is simply a different experience. No, it's not as relaxed as sitting down in a restaurant. It's not meant to be. You get the food and you eat it on the street. I'm not sure why so many reviews seem so confused or critical about this very common concept.
The man cutting the ham was super nice, as were the people working. They do not overcharge you. They have the price listed for 100g. If you get more than that, you are charged the price by weight. Whether or not the price per 100g is overpriced is a different conversation (and is very true). Just tell them to take some away if you don't want to pay for more than 100g. It's very simple and they listen with no problem if you are polite. People need to learn to use their words in real life before complaining online.
This ham was so good that we spent time searching for it in other casual places (not restaurants), made just like this. We tried delis and other meat places, no dice. You can find prague ham all over, but we didn't find it done just like this. I'm sure there are probably others but we didn't stumble across them.
So if you want a unique experience eating some delicious meat and the closest thing to Czech street food in Prague's beautiful main plaza, then do this. It is for tourists. It is for the experience. I do wish it was a lot cheaper, but it was pretty much...
Read moreWell known tourist trap, what they do is that they charge per weight, meaning a certain amount for 100g, so the first thing you see is a certain amount of money which is reasonable. Before you have time to process that information (as in, you need to take care HOW much you'll get and thus that with a big portion size, the price increases significantly), one of the 5? 6? 7? people in the booth instantly asks you what you want to order without giving you any time to think. Then they abuse the fact that you don't have a feeling for the Czech currency (unless you are Czech, then you get a smaller portion size anyway) you get your humungous portion and pay the equivalent of 25€+ for some ham, mustard and a piece of bread. That amount will get you a full meal in one of the restaurants right there at the square. So i ordered 100g specifically, one of the guys showed me a small piece of meat of the guy who ordered before me saying that 100g is only that small thing (which was an obvious lie since i saw the portion size and therefore knew that the fraction was way too small). When they could not persuade me to order more, the demeanour changed and they were disgusted with my presence. Once i received my meal they instantly trashtalking about me to each other in Czech right in front of me. They were clearly frustrated/angry about not being able to rip me off. Which is surprising because any sane person in their spot would just deal with a customer like me quickly and then target the next one, a sale is a sale after all. Which shows just how much the uncontrolled greed is a fundamental part of their mentality. Be smart, eat somewhere else or order a certain portion size and be persuasive about it. The ham i got was pretty good though, hence the two stars. An honest ham stand in that location would be a great thing. Thank you Janek and Honza from Honest Guide for warning the people about this trap, they saved countless tourists from being ripped off by...
