After going to the MoMA, we stopped by here for ramen after a few-minutes walk and it was a good experience.
The staff seated us soon after arriving. They are nice and served us promptly.
We ordered tako yaki, tantan ramen, shoyu ramen and the curry pork rice. I also ordered an umeshu soda but, unfortunately, it was sold out. I got an asahi beer instead.
The tako yaki was different from the usual tako yaki you get from anywhere else - it was slightly crispy on the outside, and I liked that. The tan tan ramen's broth was thick-ish, savory and slightly spicy - it was delicious and I'd get it again. The shoyu ramen was good, however, I thought the truffle flavor of the broth was heavy. My son liked it, however, my daughter thought the same as me: after a few tastes, I quickly got tired of it. My wife's fried pork cutlet over rice and curry was great: the pork was appropriately crispy but juicy and the curry was slightly spicy - perhaps I'll order that the next time.
The place was well-decorated, comfortable and clean. I think the sake barrels, Japanese movie posters and beer posters are a cool touch. However, near us, the roof would leak heavily from time to time, over a decorated display roof and into a bucket. (late-July, 2024) I don't fault them for this, but I hope they get it fixed soon.
The restroom was nice and clean.
This was a good place to eat, serving typical ramen-shop fare. I'm not sure I would go out of my way to eat there, however, when you're in the neighborhood and want ramen, it's not a bad...
Read moreThis was a nice find on a walk in the city, and I'm glad I discovered it. The restaurant is well maintained, and a very cozy to sit and eat. The hostess, waitstaff, and servers were all pleasant. The place was busy on an afternoon and I'm not surprised because this place must have a following. My vegan ramen was very good, and the green tea mochi was a delicious treat. There are a few areas of improvement that would really make Shinjuku perfect: The Ramen dishes should include more ingredients (in my case, more vegetables) for the price, or, the prices should be lowered to 14/bowl as they exist now. There are other options for Ramen in the city that offer fuller bowls for less. It would be even better if the waitstaff were more attentive (ex. checking on how the meal is, if we need anything etc.) Not their fault, there are only two at the time of writing and I believe they may be overwhelmed. Subtle experimentation with spices could go a long way to boost flavor in the dishes. As other reviewers mentioned, the food is good, and could be more "wow" worthy. It would be amazing if the menu had labeling for Vegan options (no animal products), Vegetarian options, and Gluten Free. Expanding vegetable dishes offered would be superb.
Overall a nice restaurant that could be even better w/ a few changes mentioned above. I look forward to returning...
Read moreThe food was okay, but the service was very bad. I went with my friends to eat at this place and the waitress who served us was very rude from the beginning, saying that we couldn't share and that each one had to order a main dish, which seemed super strange to me because this had never happened to us. I was accompanying my friends to eat and even so I asked for an appetizer and she told me that it was very small and that if I wanted something else, first how is this lady going to know if I am hungry or not and I have to order more food because she demands it. I also brought a Coca Cola from outside and I hadn't noticed the sign saying no food and drinks from outside, but I wasn't drinking it at the time and she just said that I had to throw it away or I had to pay 10 dollars. It should be noted that she said everything in a bad way and at the end of the meal a friend asked her where the bathroom was and she answered rudely saying that it was next to the cashier. My friend pointed it out because she didn't know which way the checkout was and the waitress answered the same way and said yes...
