Update 12/30/24 The response from the restaurant is confusing as it does not address any of the complaints I laid out and apologizes for the one thing that wasn't an issue - the wait for a table. It is disappointing that none of the food issues were addressed, nor the unfriendly service. Perhaps they don't have an excuse for that. Do better.

Original Review Was visiting the Hill Country and on our drive through Fredericksburg we decided to pop in for lunch on a Sunday at around 1:30pm. There was a short wait, but nothing outrageous. Once seated we ordered drinks and food. We originally wanted fried mushrooms but they were out along with the quail eggs.

Our server - I should note - was not friendly, but maybe she was stressed because of the restaurant is in a tourist heavy area. She wasn't rude, but in no way welcoming or friendly.

We started with onion rings since the mushrooms were 86'd. They were tasty and more like onion straws/fizzled onions. Ranch for dipping was very nice and not too salty.

We both ordered the small chicken fried steaks with green beans for our mains. I wanted mac and cheese but, like the mushrooms and quail eggs, they were out so I oped for a loaded baked potato.

The food was fine overall. Steak was a good size, if pounded a bit thin, and seasoned well. Gravy was creamy and thick. Bit disappointing to note they serve canned green beans seasoned with ham and tomato directly on the plate with the steak, so green bean juice made the steak soggy on the bottom. Baked potato was ridiculously tiny and so cool in the cheese did not melt.

Overall it is not bad, and pretty much what I expected from a tourist trap town. The restaurant is kept very cold, so bring a jacket if you are sensitive...

Poor service from the management down. We were really looking forward to eating here. We were seated at 12:30 and ordered within five minutes. Our appetizers came out very quickly and were delicious. We figured something was off when our waitress began avoiding our table. 45 minutes later we were noticing people who were seated well after we had originally ordered were done eating and paying.

When we asked about our food we received no explanation as our waitress simply walked away. We then went to the front to ask and the staff wouldn’t answer and all went to the kitchen. At that point I asked for the bill and the guy at the counter wouldn’t ring me up. Instead he went to the kitchen where we could see the staff looking at us and talking.

Finally the manager came out and told me we hadn’t received our food because we hadn’t put in our order until 10 minutes prior. I told him that’s not possible because how could we have received our appetizers 45 minutes prior?

He then became very defensive and started to talk about the complexity of running a kitchen and offered a tour but continued to insist our order had just been put in. I agreed that the kitchen probably did just receive our order after our waitress realized she had made a mistake. We just wanted to leave at this point.

He became more angry and said he wouldn’t charge us for anything because it wasn’t worth his time.

I just wish they would have owned up to their mistake. It happens and is understandable. I just couldn’t believe the manager was so insistent this was our fault.

It not only cost them our business but the two families standing outside looking at the menu after we shared...

Hostess was very welcoming when we walked it. There was a table open, but we were not comfortable at the front door next to the host stand, and with no hesitation the hostess took our number to give us our preferred table. Waiter was very attentive, refilling drinks and just making sure everything was to our liking. The food was delicious!! We noticed that the menu options and prices did not match the pictures from other reviews but we did not notice the age of the reviews. We almost left, nothing against the restuarant itself. We knew what we wanted off the old menu and the prices were higher than we expected. Make sure you go to the restuarant to see updated menu and prices. We decided to stay as we just got engaged earlier in the day and it was a reason to celebrate. It is well worth the price!! We shared the Spicy Cheese Curd. My fiance is not much of a spicy eater, I love spicy. It was not too overwhelming for her and I was happy with the spice to flavor ratio. They were perfect. I got the Doc Holiday sandwich and the steak just shredded as I bit into it. I do wish I had asked for some jalapeno, because I think it would have been the perfect kick for it. She got the Outlaw Ribeye, medium rare, it was grilled to perfection. Side of mashed potatoes and veggies. Everything had great flavor, meats were juicy. So glad we did not skip. In total our bill, excluding tip, was just shy of $100 and was well worth every penny. I for sure want to go back when I visit...

We’ve been to the Hitchin' Post Steakhouse a few times and felt it was time to do a review this June. The four of us strolled in and we were seated right away, and that’s pretty good considering the space is very modest, so we were probably very lucky. This is also their second restaurant -- the first Hitchin' Post is located in Ozona, Texas. There was plenty of Patriotic and Texas décor both inside and outside. There was also a lazy L-bar where one could get just slide up and grab a tasty drink - or two. Service was quick and there was very little wait time from when we placed our orders – the main courses came out right as we finished the entrees! For appetizers we had the fried spicy cheese curds and the fried dill pickles – both perfect starters. Our main courses were the chicken fried steak with seasoned fries and fire roasted corn; the crispy chicken fingers with fried okra and green beans; a robust and variegated chef salad, and the grilled barramundi with garlic mashed potatoes and sweet potato fries. As you can see, these are all favorite southern comfort foods, and they were all delicious! We ended the meal with the Peach Cobbler and a dollop ice cream – yum! The entire bill was around $126 with tip so it was very affordable. We will be back – The Outpost Salutes You!

Worth the trip! Went here for a nice meal for our anniversary and found our whole experience top notch! Our beverages stayed filled due to excellent customer service from a stellar waitress. Our food came out quickly and we were happy to see the large portions and delicious food. The mashed potatoes were dynamite! My husband and I kept trying to figure out why they were so good. Garlic? Cheese? Cream? They are skin on but they don’t taste it. The cowboy steak (lip-on) was cooked exactly the way we ordered, and delicious to boot! The MASSIVE chicken fried steak was impressive! The breading was light and flavorful, the steak pounded thin but had a lot of moisture. The macaroni and cheese was not my favorite, a little too soft on the noodle and a bit bland in comparison to all the other flavors on the plate. However the mixed veggies (zucchini, carrot and broccoli) were delicious! Seasoned well & cooked perfectly. A nice texture on the zucchini, and it was a good balance for all the heavy rich foods we had. After thoughts- I’d love to see more seafood on the menu- maybe an oyster poboy? Oysters on the half shell? I am excited to go back and try the barramundi! All in all- great service, food and a fun Texan atmosphere. We will definitely return!
