I recently dined at Prime 47 on March 2nd, 2025, while visiting from Houston and meeting a college friend for dinner. Given the restaurant’s reputation and price point, I expected an elevated dining experience. Unfortunately, my visit was marred by multiple service missteps and a lack of accountability that left me thoroughly disappointed.
The evening started off on a neutral note. The salads were fine, nothing exceptional, but enjoyable enough. However, the experience took a turn for the worse when my main course arrived. I ordered an 8-ounce filet, cooked medium, but the first steak was delivered well done. Mistakes happen, and I appreciated that the server quickly acknowledged the error and sent it back without issue.
The second steak was personally brought to the table by a manager, which I assume is restaurant policy, though I found it unnecessary and somewhat uncomfortable. I did not go to dinner to be the center of attention, yet this approach inadvertently made my table the focus of the room. To add to my frustration, the manager then asked me to cut into the center of my steak. While I understand their desire to ensure accuracy, I personally prefer to begin cutting from the ends, as I can typically tell how my steak is cooked from there. Nevertheless, I complied, only to find that the steak was severely undercooked, raw or, at best, blue rare.
At this point, rather than immediately apologizing and offering a solution, the manager simply stood there and, after I chuckled in disbelief, asked me what I thought. Given that this was now the second failed attempt at preparing a basic filet to a standard temperature, I found the exchange frustrating. A steakhouse of this caliber should not require a guest to validate what should already be clear to a trained eye. A manager at a high-end steakhouse should immediately recognize when a steak is incorrectly cooked; especially when it was requested at a standard cook temperature; rather than acting as if they had no idea what was wrong. Yet, rather than taking responsibility, it felt like they were waiting for me to make a scene before they would take action.
Adding to my dissatisfaction was how my enhancement a pan-roasted crab cake was handled. I specifically ordered this as a complement to my steak, expecting to enjoy them together. However, when my first steak was returned for being overcooked, the staff insisted that I eat the crab cake on its own while waiting for the second steak. This completely disregarded the intention behind my order. Instead of recognizing that the correct course of action was to prepare the meal properly so that I could enjoy it as intended, I was essentially told to eat my food in a disjointed manner. At a restaurant of this stature, that kind of shortsightedness is unacceptable. A fine dining experience is about more than just the food; it’s about thoughtful service, attention to detail, and ensuring that guests enjoy their meal as they envisioned.
On a more positive note, the lobster mac and cheese was excellent, and my Old Fashioned was well-crafted and flavorful. Ironically, I probably would have been more satisfied just ordering those two items and spending $45 rather than paying $130 plus tip for a meal I couldn’t enjoy.
What’s most frustrating is how management avoided taking real responsibility. At no point did they make a meaningful effort to rectify the situation or ensure I left satisfied. I didn’t go to dinner to be the center of attention, yet their handling of the situation made my table the focus of the room. For a steakhouse charging these prices, I expect better food, better service, and better accountability.
Ultimately, Prime 47 failed to deliver on both quality and hospitality, and based on this experience, I...
Read moreWas told this was the “best steakhouse in Indy” and it’s the only steakhouse I hadn’t been to in Indy so I had high hopes. The service was alright. Felt like we were treated differently than the older couples that were seated near us. My bf and I ordered two different appetizers, the house bread and the coconut shrimp. Not sure if the bread was meant to be cold but it was. The coconut shrimp was delicious. We also ordered the lobster Mac n cheese and the regular mashed potatoes along with the most expensive steak on the menu (the wagyu tomahawk) medium rare and blackened. When we received the steak and side dishes, our first move was to go for the steak and make sure it was cooked perfectly. It was rare, very rare, all the way out to the edges. Normally at any other steakhouse I’ve been to, the server always immediately makes sure we’re happy with our steak before walking away. It was about five minutes before one of our servers came back up to us, and while we were waiting I of course tried the side dishes which were both delicious. When our server finally did approach us, we told him our steak was not medium rare and he asked us to cut into the middle to make sure, even though you could clearly see where we had already taken a chunk off the edge that it was rare all the way to the edge. So he agreed it was rare and we asked if it was possible to put the steak back on and he said yes and sent it back. In the meantime, our sides sat in front of us and got cold. It was easily another fifteen to twenty minutes before we received our steak back, and at this point I’m frustrated because I had expected this be a top notch experience and I see my steak being returned to me completely charred. The inside was definitely still a bit too rare for my taste but it was better than before, so we decided to give it a try. I was only able to take a total of about two to three bites and I knew I wasn’t going to be able to eat any of it due to the fact that the outside was completely burnt. Overall, my steak was burnt, my side dishes cold, and the only things I really got to enjoy was the coconut shrimp. I gave two stars because the service wasn’t horrible, and the shrimp was good. I’ve been to plenty of steakhouses though, and it was very clear we did not receive a $135 steak after it had been cooked poorly, and I expected the service to be way better than it was especially when I was seeing other people seated near us getting treated with the utmost respect. Very disappointed and skeptical as to whether I will ever return considering the chef wasn’t apologetic nor were the servers who clearly saw our steak go from very rare to charred. We were not offered any alternative solutions. Two of us and our bill was $230, and I was only able to...
Read moreWe ordered wine from the list based on Prime 47 recommendations.. Wine was brought out and poured. After tasting the wine and looking at the bottle... It was the wrong year. The wine we ordered was Not a cheap bottle of wine and was chosen for the vintage of the wine and the restaurant's wine list (which included the year) recommendations. When we asked our waitress about it.. We were told "oh our distributor sometimes sends different wine. We will just give you a "small" discount on the wine". I understand that mistakes happen... But in a fine dining restaurant, I feel this was handled very poorly. On my way out. I explained to the front hostess that I would be unable to give then a good review due to this issue being handled so poorly.. We felt like we did not even matter. No manager came to our table to discuss.. Nothing! After ME reaching out to the front hostess, on my way out the door, she then told the manager and I spoke to him. He took out paper and wrote down the wine we ordered and asked me to contact him later. ( why? Did I have to contact him.. He had his paper and pen out writing down the wine we ordered.. How about this...he should have taken my name and contact info and contacted me.... If you really cared about our service!). So I held off on my review so I could work harder then them to correct this experience... Hmmm.. and I emailed the manager. When I emailed the him ... I received a response that basically said "Sorry..I have fixed the wine list. I would have talked to you. Come see us again. Thanks" (btw... You did talk to me that night after I asked to speak to you. Didn't make us feel any better.. You appeared to only be interested in fixing your list .. Not about how we felt.) Well, we have been to many fine dining restaurants in Indy and I can guarantee their service out ranks Prime 47 service and their care about customers having an excellent fine dining EXPERIENCE. We will continue to visit with other restaurants. I visited the downtown Prime 47 location on 2-3-18. I gave them every opportunity to change the way we felt that evening but we still feel the same... So I can only assume that my review doesn't matter either...Exactly how we felt. (2 stars because the food was...
