I recently had the pleasure of dining at a restaurant I had never visited before. From the moment I stepped through the doors, I was struck by the inviting atmosphere. Although I wasn’t sure how long the place had been around, it immediately gave off a vibe that made me feel welcome and at ease. The ambiance was warm and sophisticated, with tasteful decor that complemented the overall experience perfectly. There was something about the lighting and the subtle background music that created a comfortable yet refined environment.
We were seated near the exit, not in the most private of spots, but rather in a more central area of the restaurant. Initially, I was slightly concerned that being close to the entrance might be distracting, with people coming and going. However, the restaurant's design seemed to buffer the noise, and I quickly found myself settling in. I chose to embrace the setting, and it actually allowed us to observe the lively energy of the restaurant without feeling overwhelmed. Despite the location of our table, I was able to relax and fully enjoy the evening.
The food was, without a doubt, the highlight of the night. Each dish was prepared with remarkable attention to detail, and the flavors were extraordinary. It’s rare for me to be so thoroughly impressed by a meal, but this was truly one of the best dinners I’ve had in a long time. The menu offered a range of options that catered to different tastes, and everything we ordered exceeded our expectations. From the appetizers to the main course, every bite was a delight.
Our waitress played a significant role in making the evening special. She had an upbeat and friendly demeanor that put us at ease right away. What stood out to me most was her intuition—she seemed to know exactly when to check in with us and when to give us space. She never interrupted our conversation, allowing us to enjoy our time together without feeling rushed or pressured. Her timing was impeccable, making us feel well-cared-for without being intrusive. It’s a fine balance to strike, and she did it effortlessly.
We decided to skip dessert, as we were comfortably full by the end of the meal, but I have no doubt that the dessert menu would have been just as impressive as the rest of the offerings. Overall, the entire experience was wonderful, and I left the restaurant feeling thoroughly satisfied. It’s not often that I find a place where everything—from the atmosphere and service to the food—comes together so perfectly. I’m already looking forward to my next visit, and I would gladly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a memorable...
Read moreI've been writing a lot of 4 and 5-star reviews after our trip to the south which got me thinking "am I being too generous"...but actually it just goes to show that there really is a renaissance of great food happening everywhere you can find with just a little bit of looking suitable to any diet. (Including the two of us vegetarians, one of whom is gluten-free.)
Common Restaurant is another great new American spot with thoughtfully curated food and a bar “program”. I only mention the word "program" because that's what our server referred to it as. In other words, they didn't fill the shelves with all the liquor they could find...they thoughtfully stocked the bar with all the right items to be able to provide a 5-star drinking experience for bar patrons. That kind of artistry is what we found in the food we ordered as well.
Common Restaurant is vegetarian friendly...they've got 2 types of vegetarian poutine (curry and southern) on their happy hour menu, plus three mains on the "vegetarian" section of their main menu as well.
The star for us for the whole experience was the “Southern Poutine” It's housemade seasoned pub fries, mushrooms gravy, and blue cheese. Every now and then you eat a dish at a restaurant which is so perfect and enjoyable, it becomes something you remember about the whole experience of being in the city. For us, the Southern Poutine was just such a dish. (I call these "Destination Dishes.") They put the gravy on the bottom so the fries sitting on top of it stay crispy (with a little bit more drizzled on top) along with the blue cheese. If we got to go back to Savannah, we would return here just for this dish. It was delicious and perfect.
Everything in the restaurant is “house-made”.
For my main, I had Country-Fried Portobello. It's a busy-looking dish with a perfectly battered and fried portobello mushroom as its centerpiece. sitting on top of delicious coconut and topped with Brussels and crazy-tasting pickles. I liked it a whole lot and, as a vegetarian, felt like I was getting an authentic southern dish, just for me.
My wife was happy they had corn tortillas available to make the tacos she ordered gluten-free.
If we lived in Savannah, we'd definitely come often to take part in the bar "program" and we'd send everyone we knew to get the...
Read moreDecent $5 cocktails during the 3pm-7pm.Happy Hour? The rest ? Mostly forgettable. First off,the only decent food item on there tiny happy hour menu are the 50 cent oysters. If you can,do yourself a small solid and order the entree Chicken Sandwhich as it was good. The Happy Hour menu is mostly good for the drinks Our hostess were downright unfriendly. They asked for a reservation even though we saw at least 60% of the bar and tables empty. We found this humorous and honestly..kind of sad to think that in this economic climate they ask for reservations ( hint : place was never full near close to it ). However we DID have one. The issue here was HOW they said it, and WHY they said it. The tone and deameanor was poor and reflected on the establishment. WHY even mention it to 3 x potential new customers when you have 60% of tables and bar empty. This indicates the establishment just makes poor decisions. And again..the tone? Why? Dont you want customers coming back ?
The place is hit or miss overall and would only return for the $5 mules. Everything else left me dissappointed.
Manager response was comical. Fails to actually Read and absorb the review. Based on other "Smart Alec" responses, doesnt understand that businesses are not perfect and this platform helps owners/managers inprove upon there limitations based on customer feedback. The issue wasn't "how" to make a reservation, but the fact one was made and staff couldn't find it. Then the staff rudely made a comment to us about "oh it was recently made." It was not recent. It was made hours ago and no need to talk down or have a rude tone to new a customer. It basically starts things off on the wrong foot. Also, the place was empty. WHY ask for a reservation? This isnt fine dining. It's 50 cent oysters !. Again, comical thinking here will keep us away. I'm dropping down to 2 x stars. Not cause of the rude hostesses or the Manager who attacks every honest review but honestly it was mediocre. Step your game up. I liked your chicken sandwhich, we liked your salad. The...
