I just left there (9:10am Tues March 25) because the hostess was extremely rude to me and my husband. I am 8 months pregnant and needed somewhere to get breakfast where I was comfortable waiting to be seen by my doctor. The entire bottom floor was completely empty aside from 2 people at the bar, leaving ALL of the booths open. I asked her to please let us sit at a booth because it would be much more comfortable to me than a high top table/showed her and communicated that I am 8 months pregnant and that we wouldn’t be there long but that we drove to The Diner SPECIFIALLY to sit in a large booth, because we have been here before and the two of us got a booth.
Not only did she show zero attempt to care, she shut us down multiple times completely, saying she can’t do anything to help us because the booths “are strictly for 4 or more people” — We asked if we could talk to a manager and she said “no, they are busy and in a meeting” and never once apologized for the inconvenience.
We walked down two doors to Intermezzo Café where they only have ONE giant booth and asked them if we could please sit in in so I can get food and be comfortable in this short window before my Doctors appt. And they happily gave us the one booth and made sure I felt as comfortable as possible seeing that I am 8 months pregnant.
We will never come back to The Diner again or recommend it to any of our friends or clients while they are in Nashville, when notoriously it was one of the main breakfast spots we would recommend. No guest or especially pregnant person should feel obligated to sit at a high top, turned away, and treated with such disrespect to not even allow us to speak to a manager when the entire bottom floor was open and we needed a quick, comfortable spot to grab a bite to eat.
I also have zero respect for that hostess after having been a hostess, a server, a bartender, and a restaurant...

Upon entering, I was greeted by a young woman who offered me a choice between a high-top table and a table on the sixth floor. Given my height and the fact that my legs often dangle from high tops, I prefer tables. Consequently, my husband and I opted for the sixth floor. However, as we ascended the elevator, we noticed that another gentleman had chosen the fifth floor.
Upon reaching the sixth floor, I was surprised to discover that only high-top tables were available, despite my previous request for a table. We descended the elevator to the fifth floor, the level chosen by the other patron in the elevator as we were heading to the sixth floor. Upon entering the sixth floor, we were greeted by a middle-aged man who yelled across the room asking if he could assist us. I requested a table, and he responded, “To be honest , we are closed on this floor.” This was perplexing, as the gentleman who had led us to the fifth floor was already seated.
Feeling frustrated, we returned to the first floor via the elevator. I requested a table, not a high-top, explaining that high-tops are uncomfortable for me. The young woman who had greeted us at the door looked me in the eye and inquired if I intended to make a purchase. This further confused me. Why would I visit a restaurant with a fanny pack and tennis shoes, resembling a tourist, and not make a purchase? Why was this waitress treating me in such a manner? Why? Poor customer service.
On a positive note, the food was satisfactory for a dinner-style restaurant. Our waitress was prompt and assertive, but the food was flavorful. My husband ordered the chicken and waffles, while I opted for the gumbo. Both dishes were fulfilling.
Overall, the afternoon would have been enjoyable if the staff had comprehended the concept of...
Read moreI liked the open air seating on the second floor; The friendly service; the atmosphere. The drinks my wife ordered "Steeple Chase" and my Stella.
I ordered the salmon with green beans, tarter sauce and rice. My wife ordered the filet with potatoes and asparagus. We also ordered the sweet and sour shrimp appetizer. The shrimp appetizer was la choy sweet and sour sauce over a frozen breaded shrimp. This was simply nasty. It was cold rubbery and tasteless. The sauce was applied like it had gold flakes in it so no help there. The salmon no doubt a frozen product again over cooked more seasoning wouldn't have helped, but would it have hurt? The tarter sauce which has a different name on the menu did add some moisture and some flavor. Did I mention I don't like tarter sauce? The green beans with onions was the best thing on the plate. The rice was probably uncle bens it certainly was not a fresh product and flavorless.
My wife's filet was not very flavorful but the highly recommended sauce that the filet was cooked in (?) was awful. The skin on mashed potatoes were very good as was the asparagus.
They do add a 3.5% credit card fee so look for that. Pay cash save a few bucks. I really felt bad for the server as I watched the three other tables that received their food but couldn't look the server in the eye and say it was good. But they did say it was good. We did too but I think the server knew. I knew. You could tell by looking at the moved around food on the plate. I really felt bad for the server. if our server reads this I hope you get to a better restaurant soon. You will do well. But look at the finished plate, the shuffled sandwich with the meat picked over and ask or the shrimp app with 4 shrimp left on then ask...did you not like the shrimp? How was your sandwich? I would have told him. Still I think he...
