Okay, we’re from Southern California. So we get confused when there’s a placed called “Bakersfield” since already have a city called that here…and on top of which they serve tacos, and our streets are lined with tacos…ahoy Southern Californians, Bakersfield residents and all taco lovers everywhere…these are the tacos you are looking for.
Thanks to Jon, our super funny, entertaining waiter and spiritual food guide who fielded all our questions and made sure were happy during what became a very busy night, our first night and meal in Nashville.
The food here is really good. The tortillas are all house-made. Actually everything is house made, the salsa, the tortilla chips…everything. There are good and tasty vegetarian options including the blackbeans, one of the salads, a Tostada option and 2 different tacos.
I had both of the vegetarian tacos, the Hongos (portobello mushrooms, various peppers, a kale slaw and cotija cheese), and the Huitlacoche (corn truffles [which is actually a kind of mushroom], peppers corn, onion, cilantro and cotija cheese. They were a little similar, both being mushroom based and I ended up having a second hongos. These were all around delicious and filling
My wife got the Hongos tostada which came with an extra layer of delicious black retried beans. She was happy.
Chips and guacamole was $8 with salsa or $3 with just salsa and no guacamole. This was a good sized portion of tasty chips. The guacamole was chunky but flavorful, and the green salsa had a nice tang to. The red sauce has a nice smokiness to it. They referred to that one as “spicy” but in Los Angeles terms, we’d call that “medium.” (I also generally feel at any Mexican restaurant, as a patron it’s your God-given right to automatically have chips and salsa provided when you sit down (I think that’s in the back of the Torah somewhere…) so a slight ding when you have to pay for it.
They also do a nightly shot special with a premium liqueur…in this case it was a Camareña Tequila shot. In general you can’t go wrong with a three dollar tequila shot, but the fact that it’s a premium curated liqueur really brings it up a few notches.
And although we didn’t get one, the Margaritas we saw “walking by” are served in Mason jars and looked amazing.
This is one of those restaurants where, if we happened to live nearby, it would all be over for us…well done Bakersfield. Please send us your fine tacos to Southern California. We are...
Read moreWe came here for dinner our first night in Nashville on a friend's recommendation and really enjoyed it! Our server was very helpful with suggestions around the menu. We had wanted to get the salsa and guacamole trio that I saw in several people's photos, but that's apparently no longer a thing - the salsa trio is all salsa now, so he recommended we just add a side of guac. It was a great recommendation because all three of the salsas were delicious! Both my husband and I really enjoyed the salsa verde (it's the only one of the three bowls we managed to finish), and we each liked a different one of the other two, but all the salsas had rich, distinct flavors. Really yummy!
My husband also got a bourbon flight from a local distillery, which is always fun, and we ordered six tacos to try between the two of us, so we tried most of the tacos on the menu. The carnitas is a classic, delicious. The fish was also good. The al pastor was a bit disappointing - just not as flavorful as expected. Everything else was good, but nothing particularly notable. Of all the food, I definitely enjoyed the salsas the most, but I was really curious about their multi course experience for parties of 6+! If we ever come back with a group, I definitely want to try it!
This spot is definitely popular with groups. We came on a Monday night in the middle of a major downpour, and there was a bachelorette crew, and a very large, loud table of friends hanging out. As we were wrapping up dinner, another large group (less loud) of friends came in. They have beautiful long wooden tables with benches so you can fit a lot of people, and the tables are wide enough that you can see most of the people at the table without craning. There are also booths and high tops that could hold a decent sized party as well, in addition to standard bar seating. It's a nice space. Well lit, but still ambient. A nice cozy spot for lunch or dinner that's a little quieter than everything along the strip, with good food (and...
Read moreThe food is pretty good and consistent, but the service is pretty bad. I went to the bar solo before a show. The bartender was so stressed out, I guess he picked the solo girl at the bar to take his anger out on. From the beginning he seemed annoyed I was there. My drink order was wrong, but I never had the chance to tell him. When the food came, I had no silverware or napkin but he never checked on me so I never had a chance to tell him. Some service industry people he knew sat next to me and I watched him get them water, multiple drinks, their food came first even though I was there 15 minutes before they say down. When the people next to me left I had to eat next to a really dirty counter and ultimately had to clean it myself and get my own napkins. I didn’t mind and I understand being busy, but I was bummed to feel like I was annoying the bartender. He threw my check at me to the point his friends he was giving shots to looked at me like damn what did you do. and I asked politely before I go can I please order another drink and then I’ll Get out of your way. he walked off so quickly I couldn’t order and then brought me the same wrong order drink again. I paid, tipped 25 percent per usual but man, what a depressing way to spend a night downtown alone. I just found out sad family news and just wanted to enjoy a pineapple margarita with no salt and some tacos and kinda grieve alone. As a bartender of 10 years I don’t understand being annoyed someone is alone . I even said to the people next to me who were his friends and I think staff off work, “it sucks going to a bar alone they really don’t care about your experience.” Bummed. It just made a sad day...
