We visited Sad Man’s Tongue as a group of five on a Saturday evening after it was recommended by my mother, who had previously enjoyed the food. Unfortunately, our own experience was very different.
We arrived around 7pm and were told by the host that there would be a 50-minute wait for a table. That was understandable and we were happy to wait. However, after being seated in the waiting area, we ended up waiting more than two hours with no updates or apologies from staff.
While waiting, I ordered a drink but found the bar misleading. The drinks menu advertised Disaronno, yet the bar only carried a low-alcohol imitation. Slightly disappointing, I settled for a beer.
The waiting area itself was uncomfortable and unclean. The chairs were broken and heavily worn, and the walls and furnishings looked stained. Unfortunately, the dining area was in a similar condition, with basic wooden benches and thin, uncomfortable cushions.
When we were finally seated after 10pm, we waited another 30 minutes for food that was said to be a “15-minute wait.” This was particularly concerning as my mother, who is diabetic, started to feel unwell from the long delay. When I explained this to a staff member, the only response I received was “oh, sorry,” which didn’t inspire much confidence. We walked out after another 10 minutes without eating. The reaction of the food from the table next to us who were seated after us, served, and received food before us showed us we didn’t miss out on anything.
Overall, the service felt disorganized, the environment unhygienic, and the experience incredibly frustrating. After nearly three hours, we left without eating. We were offered free shots as compensation, but at that point, it didn’t make up for the wasted evening.
Sadly, what should have been a nice family meal turned into a very...
Read moreI gotta say I had a pretty good time. To start, the staff were super friendly and welcoming. The lady at the bar greeted us with a smile and the American guy who took our orders was top notch. He had that real American vibe and made us feel right at home. Bonus points for the 20% discount they gave us because we're locals!
Now, let's talk about the burgers. I gotta say, they were pretty darn good. I ordered the big burger and fries and it was a generous portion - I actually had to force myself to finish it all. The quality was top-notch and there was a good variety of burgers to choose from. It definitely had that underground American burger club feel, which was cool.
Just a heads up, it's a cash-only establishment but there's an ATM by the door. However, I did notice that the ATM had a pretty high surcharge so keep that in mind.
All in all, I think I'll definitely be back. Maybe on a Friday to try out their beer on tap and sample some of the other burgers. The fries were fresh (not frozen) but they were a little too crispy for my liking. A few minutes less in the fryer and they would've been perfect. I will say though, the non-alcoholic drinks seemed a bit pricey.
Lastly, I did have one issue with the ventilation - I left the restaurant smelling like a burger. My hair and clothes had a strong burger scent, so that could use some improvement.
Overall, great burgers, friendly staff, and a...
Read moreRight. Let me start off by saying that I was looking forward to this place, and while still very good, it did end up disappointing me. Only because the place looks great, the menu is great, the staff are lovely and overall the experience is great. The problem comes in the form of the food, not all the food, but certainly red meat items. After ordering, you'll likely be asked if "medium rare" is good, this is the most liked rarity for beef so it's got the most wide spread appeal, obviously it's good and I'm happy for my burger to be medium rare. Unfortunately... It didn't come medium rare, it was very much well done, I'd dare say it aired on the side of burnt. Now this was at 11:30am on a Thursday so I don't know how the chef rota works and if we were unlucky and had a less experienced chef preparing our food, but this was unfortunate. I partially wish that I'd ordered a chicken burger based on my experience. I also said it was the red meat because, while I absolutely love crispy bacon, it was unfortunately also over cooked and more burnt. I wanted to love the food, I really did.
Onto the good, the menu looks amazing, I felt spoiled for choice, so there was definitely alternatives I could have chosen and had a 5/5 food experience (likely). The servers were lovely, funny, attentive and the best part of the experience. The atmosphere is brilliant, proper 50s grunge, most people...
